Guys,
I don't have a bull bar and dont really want one, although it looks balsy, and want to mount my UHF antenna somewhere other than with a bonnet mount (is there now), gutter mount etc. Ideally a bracket that comes out the front grille or from under the front lip of the bonnet. I am only using an RFI CD63 so it is pretty lightweight.
Does anyone have any ideas on this or know of a suitable bracket already in existance?

Hi ******,
I made up this bracket for my DII. It looks neat and worked fine.

The antenna cable runs under the bonnet seal at the bulkhead and then along the firewall. It then went into the area behind the drop down panel. Neat and tidy, and does not hit carpark roofs. I used a GME 6db antenna. The mirror still folded backd I used double sided tape to hold it prior to screwing it on, and that also sealed the bracket to the mirror. I still have the bracket in the shed for a pattern.
This is where the remote CB head was mounted. To the base of the ash tray, and yes it moved in and out with it.

Weird? I'll try again.
Here they are. Can anyone else see them?

I'm not sure what the pic above is showing? A bent mounting?
I agree that not all CB mounts are suitable for the bush. If you wipe my set up off, the mirror and mounting to the door is also gone. I mainly used it for "on road" comms and "light off road work". The antenna can also be screwed off if you need it to. I personally hate the "Z" bracket concept and most "universal" type set ups. Nothing ever fits properly or looks like it is supposed to be there. Antenna's need to be vertical, leaning over like they have been thrown on the car looks C@#P' But thats just me.

hmm, looks Ok Trev,,
have seen another recently that mounts off the spare??
now where was that??

I recall that as well. Removed the spare & bolted it to the heavy door bracket. It sat up between the door & the spare & the cable ran through the rubber door boot with the standard wiring.
Not sure of the technicalities with ground plane etc. but he reckoned it worked ok.

The pic above shows an off the shelf bracket bolted to the tyre carrier holding the antenna
You can fabricate a mount or just use one of those brackets and bolt the unit to the rear of the vehicle ^_^

Aaahhh right. Got that pic. sussed now. It's the rear door. It was similar, but as I recall, it was mounted on the rear face of the tyre mount but much the same I guess.

A bit like 4Bee, I,ve got it now. Initially it looked like a side rear window on a Disco with the bracket bashed into something.:)

Hi,
Try ARB am certain they have them that fit to spare wheel mount capable of suporting a Codan antenna looks good and little chance of it getting torn off.
Best of luck

Silly Question and a sillier person asking it
Can you obtain a UHF antenae which is intergrated into the window like the radio antenae on the disco's/ rangies?
I presume not else everyone would have one, does any one know why UHF/AM have to be the older style types?

The wife's VW Golf has an on glass UHF Antenna from here:

Pretty neat set up. Good for Car to Car comms, receives well. They look like cell phone antenna's.

The reason for the "old style" antenna rather than the window mount/glue on style is to do with the fact that you are not only recieving with your antenna you may also wish transmit, Those glass mounted/glued antenna are a broad spectrum antenna. In order to transmit succesfully with any sort of a decent signal strength you need to have a antenna that is tuned to the bandwidth that you intend to use otherwise you will have a very week signal and possiably over work the finals on your radio.
The best way to tune a antenna for use on a vehicle is to wrap the emitting wire around a mast in a specific manner. The length and manner in which this emitting wire is setup determines the bandwidth that is optimal for the anttenna and also helps determine the db of the antenna.
This description refers to the "in-glass" like antenna vs Helical whips, as per the above post there are cellular like antenna's but these are not for great distance comms check there db its very low. (remember db is a multiplier of signal)
Hope this helps :D

Mines mounted to the top of the snorkel and seems to work fine.
the cable runs up behind the snorkel, sort of out of sight unless you are looking for it. it runs up thru the drain holes around the snorkel head.

I'm looking at doing the same thing and so interested in how you've attached the mount to the snorkel. Can you post some pictures pls

I've got my aerial mounted on a gutter mount bracket which sits on the gutter just in front of the driver. I've got a short (15cm) flexible aerial that I use for everyday driving and for when I'm driving through thick scrub but when I get out on the open road I've got a 60cm whip that screws in. The cable runs along the gutter, over the front of the gutter and then into the cabin in the top corner of the door. From there it runs along under the roof lining and the UHF is mounted in the roof console where those with sunroofs would have switches. This is on a S1 povo pack Disco.

Hi All
Have seen a few that have been mounted in the rear roof area there is a bung there in the 03 discos just a short antenna but seem to work OK the ones that have been on club meets seem to have good range

I have thought of using that roof bung. I just keep thinking "how dificult is it going to be to access that?"

I have just repositioned mine from the gutter above the driver's side B pillar...It used to get whacked by tree branches.
I could have mounted it on the bullbar but I figured that higher was better.
It is now gutter mounted on the rear behind the D pillar and protected by the roof racks (I hope). I fabricated a z bracket that is bolted to the gutter mount and lowers the base of the antenna so that only the short 3 dba aerial protrudes above the rack. For flat treeless terrain the taller 6 dba is not an issue.
I don't have a bung so the coax runs between the rear door and the seal....leaking could be an issue...but it hasn't rained heavily enough for this to become apparent.I found a way through the various and manifold bits of trim so that the cable is invisable.
I will use it for the first time in this position this weekend:D
I will post a photo when I am reunited with my camera.
