View Full Version : RAVE and Win 10

I have a genuine version of RAVE V015-2 which covers the L322, P38A, and Defender (all up to 03/2003).
I just did a Win 10 upgrade and it no longer runs under Win 10. Dunno if it's owing to the Win 10 upgrade. Acrobat starts then it all stops. Doesn't even appear in Task Manager.
Doe anyone else have it running on the latest iteration of WIN 10 Pro, i.e., 2020-06 Cumulative Update to Windows 10 Version 2004
Off to see if it will run under WINE on my Linux Mint machine. I've never used WINE (I only drink it).
'Tis a nuisance as I use it quite often to answer questions on here and elsewhere, snipping and posting images from RAVE. I'd rather have it here than on another PC. I have it running on my iPad and iPhone - you never know when you'll need it when travelling.
Maybe I need to uninstall the update for a test.

mine runs fine,, was it something to do with having an early version of acrobat?

Anything's possible. RAVE comes with a modded Acrobat 4.
I reverted to an earlier version of Win 10, Version 1909 and it runs again.
I tried getting RAVE to run on my Linux Mint machine under WINE but with no luck. I obviously have no idea what I'm doing.

Does your RAVE CD have a collection of pdf files? On my Linux machine, I just open those files directly. I've been doing it that way for about 14 years.
EDIT: Actually that is my "The Landy CD", not RAVE.
Further edit: On the RAVE CD, I right click on RAVE.exe and then click on Wine Windows Program Loader.

You could try using compatibility mode

(assuming Acrobat reader, and not full version) .. Get rid of Acrobat, use SumatraPDF instead. Much less bloat.

I’m laying in bed at hospital at the moment so I can’t try anything.
RAVE files won’t open with standard Acrobat (Reader or Pro). One needs the modded version included with RAVE.

Ron,
When you get home, try the version on the fullfat website.
I think that will come up with version 4 of acrobat so you can use Rave.

I can confirm that Rave 1 doesn't work under Windows 10 2004 either but it is fine under 1909. I've tried compatibility mode and it doesn't like that either.
It works perfectly on my Windows 8.1 tablet so at least I'll have something to run it on other than my phone...

Can you really get it to work on an iPhone?
How?

....
Are you using Acrobat of some variety?(ie. the free reader, or the full version), and if so is it an old version(ie. the one that comes with RAVE)?
I have W10 2004, still use SumatraPDF(small lightweight PDF viewer) no issues here. Wouldn't expect issues either as RAVE is simply a PDF file.
Without knowing the specifics of what you are doing exactly, it sounds like your using the full features of RAVE, which (from memory) are that it has and uses an old Acrobat reader program to make it easy for the user to read the pdf files.
If you forget about using Acrobat that came with RAVE, and just open the pdf files in any PDF reading program, you won't have an issue.
The only thing you need to know is where the RAVE files were installed too, and by the way, you don't need to install RAVE, just place the entire RAVE folder anywhere on the PC.
Then with whatever pdf viewing software you have that works in Win10(ie. stuff like MS Office, Open Office, Acrobat Reader(modern version), most browsers .. etc. So many software nowadays natively read PDFs, you don't really need a dedicated PDF viewing program.
But I've been using Sumatra for so long and used to it now, that's just what I prefer now.
SumatraPDF download HERE (https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader.html).
My biggest pet hate about Adobe's programs is the annoying bloat they force on you when you install their programs. Adobe reader is the worst of the lot!

Whilst I wasn't looking, Windows did an update, and now RAVE won't load. If I try to open the individual pdf files from the directory, it throws an error about unathourised files.
Tried opening as administrator, and compatibility mode, no dice!
Anyone got a workaround?

mine is the D2 rave and needs an early version of acrobat reader to work??

Yep, you need Acrobat 4, (which is on the disc with it) and some scripts wont load so you just acknowledge that.
It had been a week or so since I opened it.

Did he update to 2404 as in another thread?
I am on 1909 and plan to stay there until Microsoft fix the bugs on 2404 whenever that will be.
My understanding from a Google is that you have to agree to update to 2404 if you are on 1909.
It will not do it automatically.

I think you're right, I'm still on 1909 as of last night and it was waiting for me to manually upgrade.

SWMBO has used my PC during the week when I'm working, so she may have clicked the ok button.
Inc, it's not the free version of RAVE, it's the ones I bought from your shop [biggrin]
I don't know if I have the current Acrobat reader, I generally use Nuance.

^^ This.
I just did this, after copying the RAVE CD to my HDD, in a simplified form as shown here: RAVE Not Running Under Windows 10? | RangeRovers.net Forum (https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/rave-not-running-under-windows-10.346140/)
I have a genuine RAVE disc, not a bootleg copy.

My win10 opens Rave even with the latest feature update. It runs it on Acrobat distiller 3.01 for windows whatever that is. The only message I get is for Helvetica not being available.
The acrobat version must be in the files which I have on my hard disk.

Worked for me, I'm running 10.0.19042 (PC is only 4 weeks old) and it wouldn't start up.
Was about to post if anyones had this issue and a quick search brought it up [biggrin]
Trying to run from either of the 3 hard drives though I kept having to click thru a bunch of "file not found, path not found" etc etc until it got to the splash page.
Running it from the original .iso disc image in Alcohol 120% and these warnings all disappear so not sure what the issue is so just keeping them permanently mounted on 2 virtual drives.

Probably won't help anyone now, but I noticed this today. After opening RAVE for the first time in a long time to see if the D1 3.9 manuals were different to the 1995 RRC pdf I have, because I am chasing a evap issue with 'Lady Sarah'.
I have Windows 10 Home 2004 build 19041.685 - I changed the RAVE.exe and AcroRd32.exe to run in Win 98 SP2 compatibility mode and it's fine. Honestly the last time I opened the RAVE exe was probably on our beloved Windows 7 Pro. So likely almost a year ago.

I put only the rave.exe in windows 95 compatability and everything opens and clicks through properly with the included acro 4 reader. Too much effort opening individual pdf and scrolling thru.
I am running windows 10 october 2020 release with all updates installed.
I also have latest adobe acrobat reader dc installed and it does not interfere.
You can doubleclick the .iso on windows 10 which will open it up to show the folders/files then copy them to a folder on your hard drive (i named mine rave) put rave.exe in compatability mode, then create a shortcut on your desktop for easy launching.
Shortcuts do not have to be in compatability mode only the files they point to.

Can confirm this works.
Seems Windows 95 compatibility is the key (tried working backwards thru versions).
Thanks.

I had a HDD fail. Upon recovery, I lost a working RAVE.
I tried copying it to my new HDD from the genuine RAVE CD, running it in XP SP3 compatibility and as an Administrator but it fails with a Portable Document Format has stopped working.
Windows 10 is 22H04. Maybe I'll need to go back to Win 10 version 1909.
Has anyone got it working in the latest versions of Win10?

I run all of that stuff in a virtual machine. Volvo VIDA on WinXP, LR Microcat on Win7, VW ETKA on Win7.
My version of Microcat has "expired", so I have it set to start the VM with the date set to 1st of April 2009.
Too much hassle with compatibility crap with this proprietary software. Doing it this way means I can do whatever I like with the underlying hardware and OS, but the fussy software just keeps working.

On the subject of VMs, try this (https://www.virtualbox.org/). Works great, and best of all it's free.

Me too. I use a Mac, and used to pay for Parallels, but for the amount of times I need to run a win program it's not worth the $$$, and VB is easily as powerful. If I want to use Linux for some obscure reason I just boot into that.

Virtualbox is nice in that it runs on multiple operating systems and will run the same VM the same way on all of them, plus it's dead easy to use and as you say *free*. Can't get much better than that.
I use Linux day to day on all my machines (Mac and otherwise), but the fact virtualbox runs on the big three gives it a big plus in my book (plus it's based on QEMU and I originally wrote the "absolute positioning" tablet USB device that makes the mouse work), so I've got "skin in the game" so to speak. That was before VirtualBox existed and was for "Win4Lin" back in the late 90's.
I haven't used Windows on the bare metal since about 1997 when I started virtualising Windows 95. Windows runs so much better when you keep it away from sharp objects, are able to prevent it from downloading "security updates" and completely isolate it from the outside world. I need Windows for AutoCAD, Revit, Altium and the times I really need Office to interoperate with others, but otherwise I keep it shut up in a little box.
Nice being able to snapshot the VM to try out new software, apply an update or the like and when it inevitably breaks just roll it back.
Windows is a necessary Evil (capital E) for business, but being able to stop it "phoning home" and keeping it in a tightly controlled box solves so many issues.

I found this on RangeRovers.net today. I had tried XP3 Compatibility Mode but got a message of "The portable document format is not running". Changing it to Windows 98/Windows ME got it working.
Right click on AcroRd32.exe in the Acrobat4\Reader folder. Select "Properties" and then "Compatibility". Under "Compatibility Mode" check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and from the drop down menu select "Windows 98 / Windows Me". Apply/OK all selections.
Right click on RAVE.exe in the appropriate folder. Select "Properties" and then "Compatibility". Under "Compatibility Mode" check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and from the drop down menu select "Windows 98 / Windows Me". Apply/OK selections.
