I had a funny thing happen to me today. I knew my PCV on my BMW 4.4 was bad and had one on order with delivery expected tomorrow.

The car started smoking a bit on start up that I noticed a few days ago and when I pulled the dip stick out it had a good sucking noise, so time to replace the PCV. I ordered one on ebay last Thursday.

So today I was out working and driving around when school got out. I was at a very congested intersection when there was a small gap opened up so I nailed it to get out when it was my turn.

200m down the street a HUGE smoke plume came out of the back of the Rangie. I mean it was HUGE! The traffic behind me just about stopped cause they couldn't see in front of them. Just like what happens when you blow a Turbo.

So I pulled over to check. I kind of knew what it would be but the smoke kept billowing out. I was i little close to the road so I pulled over a bit further off the road and to my surprise what looked like just a grass verge was a drain and about 5" of soft mud and got bogged as well [bawl] .

So when I was getting pulled out of the mud by a Toyota of all things! The smoke started to diminish. I was on google looking for a tow truck but the engine sounded fine so I went down the road a bit and the smoke wasn't too bad and I only had a couple of Km to go to get home, so off I went.

So got home and there wasn't much smoke at all by the time I got there. So pulled the PCV and yes diaphragm is torn.

I hope the new one comes tomorrow.

Thanks for that, I'm looking for the actual membrane itself so I don't have to do the whole lot!

I would really recommend you change the whole valve assembly.

My valve on my July 03 build looks like the original BMW part does not have the lock tabs like shown in the video. The valve that came off my car looks like it was either glued or thermally pressed on. So when you pry off the diaphragm cover it won't click back on and you'll have a hell of a time trying to glue it back together with the valve in place.

I'd have a look at your diaphragm cover and see if your's has the the lock tabs. If it doesn't save yourself the heartache and change the whole valve assembly.

It will also let you check the vacuum lines when you are at it. Mine had the lower 6mm vacuum line perished and broken and I'll bet yours is as well. So have half a meter of 6mm vacuum line handy when you do the job. It's not hard to remove when you take off the pollen filter housing out and kneel on the top of the engine. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet with a 2" extension for the torx bit and 10mm socket that made it pretty easy. But if you just had the torx like an allan key I think it might be a struggle to get it out. The bolts where pretty tight to crack off initially.

Good luck on which ever way you go.

Great feedback, I’ll take a gander at it over the weekend. Appreciate the response

So i replaced the CCV/PCV on the Rangie and it all went well. I would say it was easier to put on than to take it off.

All is well now. The fault codes for EVAP system and catalyst performance has gone and I even picked up a couple of L/100. :BigThumb:

I was mistaken on the 6mm vac hose on the bottom connector that goes down on the drivers side bell housing, it's more like a 4mm.

(I also changed out the battery with a Delkor 60038 while I was at it)
