View Full Version : So does anyone have words of advice on Supercharged Vs V8 Diesel?

So I'm looking around and there are a few supercharged RRS around in a similar price range to the V8 Diesel (80-100K) Does anyone have any experience with the supercharged vehicles that they can share? Obviously fuel economy is not particularly frugal on the supercharged but that isn't so much of an issue with a novated lease. Suggestions welcome

2014 V8SC L494 here. I love the engine/transmission combination. This thing is fast and very responsive, if you open the throttle it just goes, there is no waiting. It tows my 3t loaded caravan with ease and will accelerate up any hill. Fuel economy is better than my D4 V8 (17l/100 in the city) but I just averaged 28l/100 on the weekend towing the fully loaded van over the Blue Mountains (Bells Line of Road) at the posted speed limit in sport mode. I usually do better than that (23/100) but wasn't driving for economy. I think it is faster 0-100 towing the van than my D4 V8 was unhitched.

Dislikes: The exhaust is little loud for me, the engine isn't as smooth as the 3.0 litre diesels, you know you have a 5.0 litre V8SC. Rear seat passengers aren't treated as well as in a Discovery 4, front seats are firm but supportive but not D4 windsor leather comfortable. My daughter much preferred the D4.
I have driven the V8 diesel and it does go well but the V8SC is another level when it comes to performance.

PM me if you want any specifics.

Thanks for that, I had just about convinced myself that the V8 Diesel was the go (and the sensible part of me thinks it probably is) I'll keep looking but I doubt I'll be doing anything soon with about 1/3 of the vehicles for sale in Victoria.

Have had my second hand SDV8 for about 18 months now.
It tows my 3 ton boat with ease..............so much torque....740Nm @ 1750 Rpm v the SCV8 625Nm @ 2500 Rpm.

The engine is so quiet and works well with the 8 speed auto.

On a recent freeway trip I averaged 6.5 Lt per 100Klm's. Normal every day driving is usually under 10 Lt per 100Klm's.

I suggest you drive both and keep the fuel economy / towing in mind.

Cheers, Craig

Have a look at SAMCRAC videos who bought one from a dealer who had stuffed up the timing when replacing timing chains.

IF we are talking the same supercharged engine it is a Ford engine and has timing chain issues when old.

At 25 / 100 you are filling up a lot. I get 7.2 / 100 when cruising empty and I will be hooked to van when I find one. I have always found diesels are the preferred tow vehicles , if you intend to sell after you have kept for awhile this will matter , check which is valued most in the 2nd hand market.

0 to 100 isn't to shabby in the SVD8 , I have the last of the non add blue , and this gives me a larger tank and less running costs , if you are after 2nd hand then this may be worth considering.

I don't think I'll be pulling the heads off one of those anytime soon, thanks for the link

The timing chain guides were updated in 2013 and now have steel inserts.

Sorry late input, my missus has a 2014 v8 twin turbo diesel and I love driving it ....especially comparing it to my 1998 300Tdi Defender 130.

The RR V8 diesel and 8 speed auto is so smooth and powerful. Only issue is turbo lag. Might look at getting an idrive or similar.

I added a PedalBox ....and eliminated the “round about lag”.

The SC V6 is not far off the V8 for performance and has better fuel economy. We love our SC D4...its a great combo with the 8 speed. Towing worst 15.8...best not towing on hwy run 12 ish. Av @14

I will never again buy a modern diesel engined car after experiencing the SC and we don't drive enuf ks to get the claimed economy and we didn't want to pay an extra 10k for one😐

One exception might be a TDV8...if a good one could have been found at the time...then that might have been too tempting🙄
