In the old Tdi, swirl was induced by the shape of the inlet port twisting (inlet and exhaust on the same side) and interestingly using a shelf at mid height all the way along the port to the throat.
I used a solvent gun spraying down the port as rough indicator and the swirl out of the valve was impressive!
