So it's time.. My 2008 D3 timing chain is beginning to make a rattle and it's definitely noticeable, I've spoken to a mechanic and they've quoted over $5,000 for the replacement. I've looked online for the replacement kits and I'm wondering if it would be worth buying the kit myself and paying a mechanic to fit it. Would anyone know if this site is reputable and worth ordering from, or would I be smarter paying more with the mechanic or dealer? Speaking from a workshop point of view, I would be checking to make sure they would accept the job. I do not fit customer supplied parts nowadays as a policy.

Mine was $2000 here in Tamworth. Have you gotten any other quotes?

Are you/they sure its the timing chain and not just the tensioner guide thats worn out? Regardless, id replace both chain and tensioner plus guide. How many kms on the vehicle?
I think 5k for a job like that is a bit steep. shop around. Also as JustinC says, most places would not fit your supplied parts, can lead to a fair bit of finger pointing. Find a reputable workshop at a reasonable price, and ensure they give you a warranty on the job. Otherwise DIY?

The workshop told me it would need the timing chain replaced and gave me that quote, not much more information from them. I haven't spoken to any other mechanics for quotes yet, I will keep looking around to see if anywhere would have a fairer price.
*EDIT* The car has over 260,000 Km and not much information in the logbook about any major repairs.. Big mistake on my part for not checking.
