We had someone snooping around our house a couple of nights ago so its got me thinking about some extra security around the house. One thing I haven't looked at in the past is adding security cameras, and as there is so much now available it make narrowing the options down a little tricky. Has anyone got any recommendations of units that are worth looking at?

A lot of them are all the same, just different branding, slight differences. Most of the ‘HD’ cameras aren’t too bad and a lot of the boxes are the same too.

Failing that, buy a dog. 👍

At the very least, buy a “beware of the dog” sign and put it on the gate.
Works for me.

Gav is right, he's seen my mofo Tasmanian poodle and it works.

In addition, get the word out that the neighbours have guns, works well too.

I have been told that beware of the dog is admitting your dog is dangerous/aggressive
Be aware of the dog
Is letting people know you have a dog

Yes- one thats POE so only one cable to the camera. I am not keen on wireless as they need power anyway. Mine is NT-N4104H-p POE 4 channel box and its old now apparently [biggrin] (https://www.nuuo.com/ProductNode.php?node=1)

The Cameras are HD, work at night to more than 10 meters and IP rated. Alarms and access via secured link to anywhere or my phone of course. Jaycar and fleabay sell a lot much of which is rubbish. I think PC Australia Epping (https://www.pcaustralia.online/) arranged mine for me and honestly was much much better than my first lot I paid a lot more for at work.

This camera looks neat at Jaycar (https://www.jaycar.com.au/concord-4k-pir-bullet-ip-camera-with-floodlight/p/QC5724)

A thief/burglar at work was busted well with my first ones.

I had a look at the wireless ones like Arlo etc because it looked like a good option: don't bother. Online reviews all said the same thing - connection problems, no post-purchase support and you have to pay the relevant maker for online storage, which like ink for cheap printers, is how they actually make money.

Sorry, gone a bit crazy with the vids here...All of these are reviews done by a guy who mainly does home automation vids.

His reviews are quite thorough and educational (he's a science teacher) so even if there is nothing here that you want, you will come away armed with some good info to help you make an informed decision.

These are listed in the order he posted them with the oldest being about a year old

I think that the first thing should be a movement operated flood light. IR sensor or two, and a parallel switch inside the house. The ****** hate light!

We had someone try to brake in a few years back, our dog must have given them a hell of a fright when he came taring around the corner of the house after them, this was 3am, the guy across the road was up making a cup of tea & saw them running the road then jumped into a waiting car & sped off down the road without there lights on. When I rang the police the 1st they asked is if we had security cameras, the 2nd police officer I spoke to asked the same question , then when a couple of officers turned up same question & the same with the forensic guy.
The next day I bought a Uniden Gradian kit from JB HIFI, it records onto a SD card then records over once the card is full ,they needed mains power for the cameras but sent images by WIFI to the monitor , which I installed my self These worked well for a few years until they got a voltage serge during an electrical storm. I rang my insurance Co & they replaced the whole kit & also installed it all. Two of the new cameras also have LED spotlights in them as well.

I got some Google Nest cameras , and a google nest doorbell, they are expensive and use a lot of bandwidth , and need a power source, if you don't have big brother concerns they are amazing .

Can stream to my TV, phone or computer. Camera lets me know if it sees a delivery at the front door , etc . hears someone talk or a dog bark , clever technology.

I did get a Cocoon set from Aldi. It works, kinda. The app is hopeless, but the cam/HDD seems fine. Probably the same as the units available at Jaycar. I can see the possums in my roof, so it works for me..... But cheap is , well, cheap.

Having been broken into 3 times in 5 years we have 6 cameras installed. Front, back, two sides, garage and a portable "cube". All HIKVision POE HD dome cameras. 5 of the 6 are wired CAT6 to a switch. The 6th is wi-fi. I use a Synology NAS drive to record. Use the HIKvision app for remote access. 2 of the cameras (front the rear of the house) email pics to my work email when we are out.

Yes I know the Chinese Govt are no doubt watching my dogs every move but that's their call.

After having success with the Ring Doorbell for parcel deliveries I expanded that ecosystem to cover the entire house/yard.

Integrated with Alexa we had the audible alert early
Morning that enabled me to catch the little ferals - rather than finding out in retrospect.

Immediate alerts are far more useful.

If you have an old phone you can download an app called ALFRED camera. you download it on to the old phone and set it up with power and access to wifi and download the app to your good phone. One is the slave and one is the master. you can set up numerous cameras and it is free. You can pay and upgrade to things like being able to zoom in or higher quality. Any movement or change in environment will send an alert to your phone stored for a week with normally two 5 second videos. You can instruct the slave phone to switch to night mode, reverse the camera, turn on the flash (like a light) send an audible siren as well as push to talk. Certainly an interesting rabbit hole to go down. Alfred Camera | Simple Home Security at Your Fingertips (https://alfred.camera/)

If I was to install something I would look at 4K cameras.
Cheers

Thanks for all the feedback so far guys, much appreciated. Unfortunately I wasnt home at the time of the incident as Im currently away for work. My wife told me the next morning that she heard a noise like someone walking across my trailer (not sure why someone would do that as 1)its noisey and 2) you can walk past it easily) and then seen what she though was a torch light outside.

I put one at work. I find it a bit of a pain for the same reason I do not like other WIFI cameras. Battery needs charging and it takes about 6 hours to charge my RING/doorbell battery. Also not they try and get you to pay for extra such a stored video ! They cost a lot then want more is a bit rude plus in my view. I can do and see the same via my wired camera system. Also Note the battery is not at all standard meaning when it does need replacing and it will I bet it will be a reasonable price[bigwhistle][bigwhistle][bigwhistle][bigwhistle]

Mine all charge from solar. Never need to touch them.
And their storage fee isn’t that bad IMO.
Several places I have them installed, no cable could be run.

Never had connectivity problems, although our property is covered by Mesh.
