View Full Version : “Gearbox fault” P081C (park input circuit)

Hi gurus

Ive just had two faults in two weeks with the above message.

I recently had a new gearbox installed (8k later) but have now driven about 3,000km across to QLD from Darwin where it was done by the LR approved mechanics so no option to go back to them.

Apart from that the gearbox feels good, both times the error flashed I was in “Park” sitting still.

Any thoughts?
Im now in port Douglas.

Does the fault appear when starting?
If it does try starting it with the headlights on.
If fault goes away when starting its usually wiring going to the shifter. If not it will be in the shifter.

It’s only happened twice with probably 50 starts between them but I don’t ‘think’ either were on start up.

One definitely happened while reversing the caravan into a site, putting the car back in park during the detach and when I got back into the car there was an error there.

The other I cannot be as sure as it was three weeks ago now but I was in Lorella springs so way out of service at the time. Definitely stationary for both

With that I would say a new shifter is required

6spd? Suggest maybe the selector position is out of whack.

That could be correct disco.
Any idea how that would be changed?

ive felt that the selector might have been a bit different since picking it up with the new gearbox, often hard to ‘feel’ the right selection has been made. Whereas it used to be easy to do blindfolded

Theres an adjuster rod up on the left hand side of the gearbox, that determines which position of the gear selector in the cabin corresponds to the position of the slider inside the mechatronic. Pretty simple to adjust, (a bolt or grub screw holding the selector rod in place) and easy to not get 100% if your tranny has been replaced. They may not have adjusted it correctly after refitting the gearbox.

Thanks Eric. Yes that’s what I was implying.

Not sure if this should be a new post but I’ve just had another GEARBOX FAULT message on my dash but this time it came with RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE

code thrown was U2023 “control module network signal calibration data”

gearbox has done about 3000km since being replaced

any tips on what to look for here?

Check the other threads on here related to U2023. Just had a quick google of this code, and appears to be ultimately HPFP related. I hope not for your sake, and not saying it is the HPFP, but worth checking anyway.

I had a new HPFP only a year or so ago, when I had that issue happen it was always throwing P0087 fuel rail pressure low as well.

This time around that code is not appearing so I’m hoping it’s not related to that. I wonder what warranty comes with a HPFP just in case though. will have to find out

ive cleared all faults as there were a few (The car actually bugged out once I plugged the nanocom in and all electronics died for a moment so the car threw about 20 codes, luckily there was only one gearbox code but as far as the others I don’t know which ones might have been associated to that and which are just from the electrics going crazy) I’ll see what comes back when it inevitably happens again

I'm probably way off beam (again), but when mine "died" about 9? months ago (after getting back from Nth Qld/Darwin), DazzaTD5 eventually found it was bad connectors in the ABS ECU under the bonnet which he actually refurbed while waiting for a new one - old one is still in there.
For a guy who sometimes says electronics are not his favourite, it was a pretty good call.
He mentioned the other day that he is expecting more of this situation to occur.

No, but I'm sure Darren would be happy to oblige as the explanation would likely go over my head.
Unless he chips in on here, text is probably best to 0418 570 305 and he is a busy one man band, so may not reply straight away.

Either way would be good to get the info in writing on here.

OK WTF, I just fixed my P081C-64 by replacing the blown interior light fuse !! Not after having first tried to fix it by buying another gear shifter and swapping it... (luckily i got it cheap from wrecker)
