Hi,
Canal boat users call the spectators at Locks gongoozelers. (spelling?)
Cheers

I gather extremely enthusiastic gunzels are called foamers.

Many years ago, when I first heard this term used to describe railway enthusiasts, I thought it was some sort of slur but soon realised it was just a name.

Then a few years later, after watching just "PART" of the movie, Trainspotters, I much preferred the name Gunzels!

Seeing the photo of the Ghan reminded me of someone I met last year on my 1/2 world cruise just months before it all went pear shaped.

On the first day of the cruise I acknowleged a bloke I thought I new and he me.

After saying g'day a couple of times it got the better of me and I went up and introduced myself , no, he got in the spa (this was before social distancing) and started talking. Nothing fitted and seems we really didn't know each other.

Anyway just to stretch the story , I later had a flash and realised how I knew him.

Just happened that that night he and his wife sat with us in the dining room and I suggested to him that he was actually a celebrity.

A couple of years earlier The Ghan and Indian Pacific ran some promotional ads and he was in the Ghan ad serving food and wine.

Some may remember his distinguishing feature , a really great handle moustache which he smiles from underneath.

Long and thin, blonde hair and mo' he actually worked on the Ghan in that position.

If I can find the ad I'll try and put it up unless someone can beat me.

I think gunzel is also used in other areas too. A friend works in the bus industry & they have bus gunzels.
Maybe Land Rover gunzels exist too...
