Hi there,
I have a MY03 TD5 Disco and had the fuel pump replaced at a paltry 18,000km.
Since then, fuel consumption is horrendous (or seems to be).
I have 245/75 Cooper STs and an Opposite Lock roof rack, but am only getting about 250km on half a tank. This is exclusively city driving and very short trips.
Any tips or correlations with this type of consumption?
cheers,
Juz1970

I get around 750 - 800 a tank with a heavy foot. I'm no expert but that sounds bad even for Sydney traffic

Is it a 90 or 110? (different size tanks). My 03 TD5 90 only got 300 klms per tank when new! Frightened the heck out of me. it now returns over 500 klm/ tank. (avge 9.2 to 10 litres/100klms. Done 55k and chipped.

I havent checked my consumption in traffic but I get stuff all in the Defender TD5 when city driving.Still get the good consumption on the hiway though.(8.5km/l).Mine would be around the same when I'm in Brissy.

Hi again people,
The Disco only has 22500km on it now, so am not sure what is going on.
Am putting it in for a service in the next 2 weeks and will be asking LR a lot of questions. The only thing I can see as factors are the very short town trips - literally 5-10 minutes and maybe the tyres.
Will keep everybody posted as the way things are going, I might be better off selling it and buying a Classic Rangie!

Justin,
There might be a problem with the fuel guage sender unit on the new fuel pump. Does the fuel guage go all the way to full when it's filled ?

The mass air flow sensor has been known to affect fuel consumption but it's usually associated with poor performance also.

See what the dealer says - I assume you'd take it to Purnells.

I wish I got even 700 out of a tank. The only time I get 750 - 800 is highway only. Around Gosford - Sydney 625 - 640. Has allways been the same since the day I drove the car out of the showroom.

That could possibly be the answer Sydney traffic. I usually don't get any traffic due to shiftwork and early starts. Mines also an auto so consumtion might be effected with transmission choice

Mine is a Auto too. Come to think of it I do most of my driving in traffic and a lot of stop and starting at lights during the day. I am starting to get jealous of you guys that live and work out of the metro areas.

I had my fuel pump replaced once and they did not install the new one correctly

I was loosing fuel out of my tank. If i filled right up then fuel would leak/weap out of the seal aroung the fuel pump.

Was a right pain , because I only discovered as I was travelling east to Brisbane from Perth. I seemed to be filling up every 400 km because I only bothered to fill my tank up 75%. Any more an it would leak out because the seal for the pump is lower than to top of the tank

My 130 averages 11.4litres per 100 km. I have 285/70 R16 Muds and roof racks. Admitedly I'm doing 150km round trip for work and 2/3 is on the highway.

your consumption is so low because the Td5 is not having time to warm up and is running rich till th engine warms up
When I had my Td5 Defender, the consumption was terrible during the week as I only used it to commute 10 minutes to work and back.. seems normal to me...
Mickrangie experienced the same high consumption in his td5 disco when only going to work and back...
Take it for a nice long drive on the w/e and see what you get..

G'day Scott,
Yeah the fuel gauge goes a bit above the full mark when filled but performance is a struggle. Although it is a bit of a tough one as the TD5 is no rocket ship anyway!
Thanks for the tip re the mass air flow sensor - will mention it to the guys at Purnell as it seems the excessive fuel consumption seems to be worsening.
And Landyman - thanks also. My weekly drive is definitely no more than 5-7 minutes (to be accurate) so will take the big white machine out for a long highway spin on the weekend. Come to think of it, it's probably been about six weeks since it has seen any highway miles. OUCH!

Thanks for all the tips everybody.

cheers,

Hi Folks,
Just an update. Went for a spin down the freeway to the Southern Highlands and back to southern Sydney and averaged around 11.3L/100km on a very windy day.
So, I guess I have solved most of the problem - ie driving for five minutes at a time is no goo!
Although the gauge still seems like it is out. It was reading nearly half empty and only took 30litres and I filled it to the absolute brim.
Getting a service in a couple of weeks so hopefully LR will be able to sort that out.
cheers,
Juz

Good to here it's all solved. Your fuel gauge sounds normal around two millimetres higher than full. Remember when your fuel light comes on you still have 9 litres left in the tank.

What is your l/100km? I'd get about 12.5-13.5 in Sydney.

G'day Slunnie,
Will have to trawl through my logbook, but am guessing around 14-15L/100km from memory. Could be wrong so will calculate a final figure asap.
cheers,
Juz

I am assuming air and fuel filters have been changed recently?

Why did the fuel pump die?
