Hi all

Where can I buy a replacement hickory handle for my old Sandvik tomahawk?

I have had this for around thirty years, I guess if it was any older the stamp on the head would say West Germany. The handle is actually broken inside the head and it has been lying around for years now hence the state of the head. It’s just on 15” in length. It used to have a very nice sheath but that’s long lost on my travels.

Thanks in advance.

Does it have to be hickory? Are tomahawk handles no longer available? It’s been a few years since I replaced the handle on mine.

Google came up with this: Axe, Adze & Hatchet - Krugers since 1911 (http://www.krugers.com.au/axe-adze--hatchet.html)

Yes you can still get handles. I guess it doesn’t have to be hickory but that’s what the original is. Maybe a hardwood would do the trick. Just none of the pine $&@p that Bunnings have.

Hardware stores still stock handles.
Hickory is still the best, but Spotted Gum is almost as good.

Try educational supplies stores in New Zealand.

If you are handy with woodwork you could grab a length of hickory or some other suitable wood and use the old handle as a template and fashion a new one.[thumbsupbig]
Failing that most GOOD hardware stores have axe/hatchet handles and so do most rural supply stores[biggrin][biggrin]

Hi trout1105

Yeah, I have the tools but not really the inclination just at the moment. We live in the country and there are plenty of rural supply outfits but none seem to have them. I’ll have another hunt around the hardware stores.

I purchased it originally from a little tool shop in Bondi junction run by a couple of very old Jewish brothers in the early 90’s. They had quality and rare tools from European and US manufacturers noone else had. Some had obviously been sitting on the shelves for decades. Alas the shop has long gone.

Thanks Don

Unfortunately the second link won’t open. I wrote to the manufacturer who actually responded. They sold that part of the business to Snap On in 1999. They provided a link and there is an agent only 20kms from me. I’ll drop in there next time I’m in the area and see what they have.

Thanks for the thread guys.

Just realised I hadn't seen my tomahawk for a while.

Now I will go and do a search for it.

I carry a full size axe...it's grandma's axe actually , but rarely use it.

Come to think of it the tomahawk might be grampas'

I couldn't open that link either, but I knew the info was in it. I'm glad to have been of assistance. And on the subject of hickory handles, I recently bought a cheap shovel from a very large green hardware chain. It was about $14.00, and is almost an exact copy of my old Ridgid No2 plumbers shovel. When I used it at volunteer tree planting gig, the Forester/tree expert identified the handle as being hickory. I never knew the Chinese grew hickory.

Couldn't find my tomohawk.

Someone must have thought it needed a better home than the one I gave it.
