I recently used my swag for the first time. It was like sleeping between two sheets of three ply. Is there a trick or secret to making the canvas compliant? Something I can treat it with?

Thanks mate, you're a great help. [wink11] I expected someone to suggest an acid of some sort. [biggrin]

As far as I am aware Like new boots only wear and age will soften up the canvass on a new swag unfortunately.
I have been using domed swags for the last few years so being new isn't a drama with these But I have bought a new standard swag to use on my boat so I will be watching this thread with interest in case there IS a way to soften them up[thumbsupbig]

I would have thought an old gear jammer of your age and experience would soak it in diesel.

That doesn't make it softer, it just stinks out a day cab. [bigsad]

That would most likely soften the canvass up But I also imagine that it would leak like a sieve as well[bigwhistle][bighmmm]

Maybe not that bad, just the same.
Many years ago, I was checking out books at the Strathpine library, when the librarian asked if I was a truckie. As my selection of books would have given nothing away, I asked why she asked.
"You smell just like my husband" she replied.

Maybe you should email the manufacturer?

And you don't even live in Aged Care in Vic.:wallbash:

Re your tarp. I would say it need buckets more of use like my bed sheets.. Can you remember what you used to use to soften a MC Lap Rug?

Oh yeah, probably SAE 30, especially around the foot rests, right?[bigrolf]

Moisture content should help with how easy it is to bend fold the canvass. I’d try a spray bottle of water. Canvass doesn’t become water proof until the fibres swell with moisture. Most evident around stitching

But but but, his Camp. colleagues might think he'd ****ed in his fart sack over night.[bigrolf]

Come to think of it, it would give new meaning to the morning rousing call when it is time to get up, Army Style. "Hands off cocks, on socks". or "Drop your cocks & grab your socks":Rolling:

You might zip it up, hang it on the clothesline, and wet it several times, letting it dry in the sun.
I learnt a lot from reading this article by Trayon on seasoning canvas.

Ian, is it a double deck swag?[bigwhistle]

It Also depends on what weight canvas your farter sack is made from.

I had a swag made from that rip stop vinyl fabric that liferafts are made from for years and it was quite plient and easy to sleep in.

I absentmindedly put it away damp once and it turned into a mildew rollup.

So over to the "new" Anaconda store and the latest Dune 4WD Outback hooped zip up supercomfortable swag at that time. 20yrs ago?

I have since replaced that with the latest Dune 4WD tent swag , some of you would have one.....but it's cold, so I have done a couple of minor mods to it. They take up some space though compared to the conventional old swag like Ian's .

Wot, minor mods like a 50,000 btu/hr Gas Space Heater? That sort of thing? [bigrolf]

Thanks Mick, a most interesting read. Now I am all enthused it looks like my S2A Canvas Tilt is going to get a hiding & a wash. Has never been treated to a man made shower. It should be genuine Military Specced Canvas as it was Brand new & out of the box with the MiL P/n on it, & the Canvas & that did smell lurvely.

Weather here is being a tad unpredictable so getting the right days could be a problem but I'll give it a go & trust to luck. Maybe a nice drive up to Queensland for a few days might help.[bigrolf]

Then again, I may wait until I get some decent sunshine & get a good choice of Movie as they suggest. A cuppa is never a problem in this house & maybe something long like "Gone with the wind".

Double width, king length with a split mattress that can be "stacked" when only one occupant.
