View Full Version : ... Where's the trailer wiring gone?

So, simple enough, I've got a towbar (apparently), never been used!
I'd like to use it, but, missing one or two critical components... Like the tongue (eBay time...) And the wiring harness!
Anyone know where I can get this from, or have one spare? The gromit to the outside looks like it has never been touched so I assume it was never there (rather than removed!)...
It's a 2003 Vogue...
Any....leads?

Not sure - there's a small white box that's part of the wiring harness IIRC (I haven't had my L322 for few years now so going off memeory) - I thought these were supplied by Land Rover when the option for a towbar was ticked, but I can't recall exactly if there was another name on the box.
You could make your own up, I think the smarts were only there to do the bulb check side of things, so picking up each supply at the tail lights would work - don't think you'd throw a fault code doing this.

Easy enough to tap the current wiring if I have to...
I thought it did tap into reverse sensors and levelling suspension

Could have gone to the reverse sensors but the suspension is self leveling from the height sensors on each wheel and doesn't need any other info when a trailer is connected or loaded - it will level itself just fine.
IIRC my reverse sensors went off anyway when reversing a trailer, so maybe my box of tricks didn't even work. [biggrin]

I believe the Australian delivered L322 were all factory fitted with the tow bar frame (there is a name for it but I can’t recall it) but not the hitch or wiring.

You need a trailer module and loom . But ridiculous money. I wired my trailer plug directly to that white plug in your picture with bullet terminals, all the signals you need are in that plug.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200806/1923882a3d4f35f7eeb2c435cb304d4a.jpg

Perfect. This is the kind of hackery I can get behind! Thanks!

That white plug is what goes to the trailer ECU (little white box). You're on the right track, you do not want to tap the wiring to the taillights.
All the lights are controlled by an ECU called the LCM (light control module). The LCM supplies a seperate 12v signal wire for each tail light to the trailer ECU (this white plug). If you tap into the taillights, you risk upsetting the globe test functions, LED trailer lights will flicker and as each circuit is protected by MOSFET there is a good chance incandescent trailer lights will be seen as a short due to doubling the current draw - not to mention a short on the trailer will mean no taillights on the car.
The white plug you are using is not a simple parallel with the car tail lights so if you get a short in the trailer wiring it won't affect the cars taillights.
Only thing you gain by having the trailer ECU is the globe test function - which doesn't like LED lights, and connectivity to other systems via iBus which would disable rear parking sensors and suspension height changes.
Long story short - don't tap the car tail light.
