Found a site called uboat.net. A history of the U-Boat war. For any one with an interest, fascinating stuff.

The U- 862, patrolled Australian waters, and sailed around NZ, sinking a number of Merchant ships, when Germany surrendered, handed over to the Japanese Navy and finished the war as Japanese submarine I-502, 15 july 1945, surrendered at Singapore August 1945.

Surprisingly, not every U-Boat was fitted with a schnorchel, even by D-Day. Looks like 200 known Boats fitted with a schnorchel by Wars end.
