Rumbling noise very low speed (intermittent)

Hi all.
I have only just bought a Discovery III SE auto diesel v6 174,000
Twice I have noticed a grumbling rumbling noise come in at very low speed slowing to a stop. Can feel it slightly as well. Bit louder if I turn the steering wheel slightly. When it occurs it does it in reverse as well.

I think its from the driveline.
Sounds and feels a bit like the rumble of block tread tyres on bitumen at low rolling speed.
The noise seems to be coming from around the transfer box area or just behind the drivers seat.

No warning lights appear.
Any help appreciated

Have you checked your wheel bearings ? At those kms the rear bearings on my car failed at 160k and fronts far less kms

99% of the time it is perfectly quiet. The vehicle has been over serviced if anything by the land rover dealer.
Noise seems more like something that is has engaged like traction control or something.
It doesn't seem like wheel bearing noise.
Seems to be more from the centre of the drive train

Don't forget all the components are connected. They will make vibration and therefore sound where they can.. the noise from the centre can be from anywhere.

I would be surprised if a dealer service looks at the wheel bearings. The engaging sound is what makes me think it could be wheel related plus the fact that you said it was noticable when you moved the steering wheel. For the sake of jacking up each wheel and checking for play i think it could be a simple way to rule them out .... just remember not to engage the hand brake when checking the rears .

Was going to do that tomorrow anyway as I have the day off and i wanted to do a good check underneath and see if there are any signs of damage or some other obvious reason for this intermittent noise.

Whilst you are under the car check the centre bearing on the rear tailshaft. i know someone who has had his fail but i cant remember the symptoms , but that could be in the area you discribe the noise coming from.

Failed centre bearing on prop shaft would be very noticeable and get worse at higher engine (vehicle) speeds.

Check pad thickness or if pads have separated from the backing plate and are wearing unevenly.

Wheel bearings perhaps, but again would be a noise increasing with speed.

Or transfer case, front or rear diffs, suggest to check oil levels.

Likely electric Park Brake dragging or nearly out of adjustment, pretty common. Remove rear wheels and hub, clean out, lube mechanism, replace hub and readjust

Hi all
Updating my grumbling noise still no joy.

Have jacked up each wheel and checked wheel bearing play and unable to find any play.
Checked centre bearing and seems to be no play there either.
Hand brake sounds like the next move.
Will check oil lil levels.
will keep you posted.
