Reversing light wire??

I am installing a rear work lamp this weekend, mounted to the rear of the roof rack, and being a slackarse I purchased one of those prewired driving light wiring looms already to go with relay, isolator switch etc..
Two questions, where is the best place to hook into the reverse light wire for the switch wire and what is the best way to bring the wires out of the rear door to the light??? Can you feed it thru the door seal rubber, and if so wont it abraid and arc and burn my car to the ground etc etc.
Oh yeah its a Defenedr, Defeneerder, yeh one of them.:D

just drill a hole through the panel above the little window......just under where your light will go.....

what you are hooking up is a reverse light.....not a work light.....
it will only come when you are in reverse.....

i was gonna give someone else a chance to answer......
but i am truly touched that you want to hear it from me.....


just splice it to the reverse light itself.....the wire you will be splicing is only the feed to the
pull in solenoid of the relay......not power to the actual light itself.....i hope....

If you intend to use this lamp as a Work lamp, take you power feed from the Taillamp cable that way it will only operate when your lights are on that negates the possibility of it being left on and flattening the battery:( If you only want it for reversing, connect it to the Reversing Lamp wire, I am not familiar with the wiring codes on the Defender, but if it is like the earlier Lucas code then , Red is side/tail, Green/purple is Stop Lamp and Green is Reverse, But may be somebody more familiar with the current codes :)

as usual I have confused the issue.:( The harness I have bought has a seperate switch to enable or disable the light, it also has a feed wire from the switch to hook into the reverse light wire.I originally thought I would just hook the light up with just the on off switch ala worklamp. But upon reflection thought I may as well hook it to the reverse light anyway, as I can isolate it regardless. Couldnt I hook into the reverse wire via the top of the gearbox? Seems a long way to run a feed from the reverse lamp all the way back to switch on the dash.

Why bother with the dash mounted switch? Pick up the trailer power supply wire at the rear of the car and have the switch at the light case. This way it will come on when reversing, (via a relay), and you can also manually turn it on via the switch at the lamp. (your car will not be in reverse so it will not back feed to the gear box switch). I also wired mine via a relay from the tail light wire so it will only work as a reverse lamp if the lights are on. The relay also supplies power to the work / reverse lamp via the trailer power wire and does not add to the current draw from the light switch.
The bonus is that all of the wiring is done at the back of the car.

Hope that does not confuse the issue further.

Couldnt be stuffed with the reverse wire deal, so just ran the wires from the battery , up the D pillar, under all the internal covery things to the back door, and enlarged the rear washer spray thingy hole and brought the wires out thru there.Put a neat little push button switch on the drivers side of the cubby box that has 2 lights in it, green for on and red for off.

Sorry, the harness already had a 10amp fuse and relay, forgot to mention that.:huh:

the problem with extra wiring on 4wds that actually go off road...is not the beer cans popping in the engel
because they have rubbed through.....

its because the wiring wears through and shorts out....make sure there is no movement in any wiring.....
use lots of cable ties if you have to....if there is a fuse chances are you will avoid a fire.....
but think of the fun you will have trying to fix the problem out in the outback.....?
and if it was the power to fridge.....?
and you did fix it......you wouldnt be able to have a coldie at job completion....:eek:
