Hi team

My 300Tdi has developed this strange loud ticking noise that seems to come from the transmission. However it is intermittent and only occurs under around 65 kph. The ticking is not consistent with either road or engine speed, and will often remain 'ticking' for a couple of seconds after you are stationary (engine still running). It seems like something is rubbing on a moving part but the fact it still occurs when stopped rules this out I guess. The fuel system is standard.

The gear and transfer boxes were replaced with reconditioned units around 5k ago and this work was done by a very reputable LR specialist in Windsor (NSW). It has just under 300k on the clock.

Any clues as to what it might be? At this stage it is more an annoyance than anything serious but I would like to resolve it before it becomes serious.

My bet is the Brake Vaccum Pump... Try getting a length of hose. stick one end in your ear, and move around until you get closest to the noise. But that damned vaccuum pump sure can make a loud knocking sound.

Yup could be. Not sure how I am going to do that as only occurs when moving or immediately after I pull up.

Sounds like a job for the wife to sit on the front poking the hose toward the vacuum pump while I drive up and down the driveway :-)

Maybe get her fit enough to run alongside at 65kmh with the hose. You'll need to watch your speed though or she might get ahead of you & you could flatten her.

Not much help am I?[bigrolf]

I’m guessing you won’t be the one suggesting that to her? Light the blue touch paper and stand back!!
