Just got back from the cape towing a camper trailer (1500 kgs approx) with my 130 defender. Its currently running a disco transfer . Cruises OK but any hill knocks the wind out of it. I know the vehicles no rocket but im thinking going back to defender transfer case and a VVT turbo. Any advise on this setup. I was going to put my 1999 td5 5 speed back on the road . But my mates 110 did its alternator and we were able to drive 160 klms with no issues. not slagging off at TD5s but doubt it would do it. Baz

in my experience, definitely go back to a defender transfer case if your towing anything over a tonne...

Isuzu. There is only so far you can go with 2.5 liters.

The td5 will not run without alternator output.
And yes I would go back to the old gearing before pushing more stress through the 300tdi

I have a 90 with TDI and VNT as well tuned as any I’ve driven. I also have a heavy 110 with a turbo Isuzu. The 110 is 3.2 tonnes and is much faster than the 90. It has more than enough power for any situation.

Which Isuzu motor? The 4BD1T, or without T?

I love my 300Tdi, but I've always wanted one of those Isuzu motors!

Get a 4bd1t if you can but be aware that the genuine turbo motors are normally out of trucks and are therefore a lot older and often thrashed to death
I would be more inclined to buy an ex ADF motor ( watch out for hydrolocked ones) and add a turbo
The ex ADF 4bd1t’s are good but will still need a new turbocharger

Have you thought of a new vvt and an overdrive......

what about a 4JJ1 out of the D-max. the 4JJ1 also came in light/medium trucks with a truck gearbox. Not sure what model truck gearbox but if there is any compatibility to the MSA/MXA range, you could hit up Sheldon for an adaptor to suit. the 4JJ1 will put out 180HP/500nm with a tune and be a nicer engine to live with compared to the 4bd1T. Steve Etcell (mechanic out western sydney) is doing patrol conversions so would have the ECU/wiring harness stuff sorted. food for thought

I'm putting one with a 4JH1 in a forward control series landy.

i saw an article that isuzu have released the AMT version of the MYY5T. Automated manual in a FC would be a nice way to get around.
