In five rounds, an artificially-intelligent agent showed that it could outshoot other AI’s, and a human. So what happens next with AI in air combat? An AI Just Beat a Human F-16 Pilot In a Dogfight — Again - Defense One (https://www.defenseone.com/technology/2020/08/ai-just-beat-human-f-16-pilot-dogfight-again/167872/)

This video gets into the actual simulator dogfights, including the parameters they used for the AI vs human pilot, and explains why autonomous AI fighters are still a fair way off, ie at least decade or more. Note that CW Lemoine is a USAF fighter pilot.

I enjoyed watching that. Informative, and interesting. Fighter pilots are a breed apart.

I will wait to see what happens when they put an AI in a QF-16 vs a piloted F-16 for some live flying. The limitations of the older generation simulator they used, which favoured the AI (many reasons were mentioned in the video) won't be there, so I daresay the results won't be the same cakewalk. In the first few combats, the AI controlled QF-16 is initially going to get hammered, but improved programming and machine learning, plus better sensors will bring it up to speed.
Once you sort that out, you have to work out the best role to deploy AI in combat, which will be honed at Red Flag exercises. Plus you will need to work out the all important ethics framework. That will all take time, but mature systems will be invaluable in a contested airspace, although they will probably not completely take over some piloted aircraft roles. When they do iron out all the bugs though, it's going to be a game-changer, much like missiles, radar, jet aircraft, stealth, etc.
