The USS Stark incident. Hit by two exocets, of which only one detonated, USS Stark suffered a number of dead and injured, and their close in weapon system was found to be not switched on. A real GEE WHIZ moment.

HMS Sheffield, Falklands War. Probably the best description of the action I have read.

After the ship was struck and her crew waiting to be rescued, Sub Lieutenant Carrington-Wood led the crew in singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Monty Python’s Life of Brian (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Monty_Python%E2%80%99s_Life_of_Brian?action=edit&redlink=1).[12] (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/HMS_Sheffield_(D80)#cite_note-11) Over the six days from 4 May 1982, five inspections were made to see if any equipment was worth salvaging. The MOD (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Defence_(United_Kingdom)) report into the sinking of the Sheffield concluded that: "Evidence indicates that the warhead did not detonate".[9] (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/HMS_Sheffield_(D80)#cite_note-Board-8) Some of the crew and members of the Task Force believe that the missile's 165 kilogram warhead had detonated, upon impact.[5] (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/HMS_Sheffield_(D80)#cite_note-hastings-4) This would not have been the case, as Exocets are fitted with delay fuses, and do not detonate immediately on impact.[10] (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/HMS_Sheffield_(D80)#cite_note-9)
Irrespective of this, the impact of the missile and the burning rocket motor set Sheffield ablaze. Some accounts suggest that the initial impact of the missile immediately crippled the ship's onboard electricity generating systems, but this only affected certain parts of the ship, which caused ventilation problems. The missile strike fractured the water main,[11] (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/HMS_Sheffield_(D80)#cite_note-Golowanow-10) preventing the anti-fire mechanisms from operating effectively, and thereby dooming the ship to be consumed by the raging fire.

The sinking of HMS Coventry. While under attack Coventry turned to present a lower profile, but turned across Broadsword, which was unable to fire her sea wolf system as Coventry was directly in the line of fire.

The excellent BBC documentary, " Sea of Fire " about Coventry. A ship on the way to War is a different beast to a peacetime cruise. Suddenly its serious, and the crew are just that bit more switched on, at least in my experience. The common bond of a ship at sea is magnified many times by the experience, and it's something you never forget. A band of brothers is a good description. Even now, 50 years on, after our Vietnam experience, I have friends who are more brothers than mates. So, " The sea of Fire "
