Yep, the GME TX3400 with the head unit under the drinks holder behind the transfer lever, and the body under the dash. Great spot unless you have drinks in the holder.

I know it's not a Disco but this may give you some ideas.
I've mounted the detachable head unit from my Uniden to the dash with automotive double-sided tape. The main unit is inside the rear wheel well, under the floor.
The speaker is double-sided taped to the under side of the centre console in the rear seat area

some people hang them around their necks....on a lanyard......but these are the handheld units......
i have seen quite a few fitted on the front or back of the centre console.....
or you could fit a roof console......

I've got the '98ish disco interior (i think its 98) and being no electric windows I made a braket and shroud as such to slot in beside the handbrake.... seems to be ok but I done actually have the car on the road yet:rolleyes:

I have a one piece unit and mounted it vertically on the flat area at the back of the centre console.
I made a mounting board for it out of thin custom wood with a bit of piano hinge at the top and hung it off the same screws used for the centre console lid. That way there's no need for any extra holes to be drilled.
Its out of the way back there and because on mine the speaker is in the unit makes it quite easy to hear people over the noise of the TDi. The only disadvantage is you need to twist your head around to to see the display.

Same as Slunnie with the type of radio and where it it positioned. Found the GME great.

I have a uniden full unit mounted in the overhead "console" that is standard. You can cut out the blank plate and mount it there. I was happy to do that as I will probably leave it in there when I upgrade and replace it with a detachable head unit.
Failing that I figure it will be cheaper to buy another console from a wrecker than buy an aftermarket roof console anyway!

I was considering this option, do you find the microphone cables hanging down annoying or can you tuck them out of the way?

Mine is mounted there and no it is not distracting except for when the microphone falls off the clip on rough roads and whacks me in the face.

Yes ....ballistic editions of Simpson's Field Guide to Australian Birds...who said that bird watching is a gentle pursuit except that being hit on the noggin by a pair of Gerber binoculars is worse

Not a very good photo, but mine is mounted on a bracket and screwed to the plastic trim. if you want a better photo I can take another one, as this one is a bit old now. And this pic is also missing the mic mounting that i added.
anyhow....

Right, took some more pics of my setup....
Have CDMA phone, UHF CB, pda for GPS software and a GSM mobile phone too...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
CB and CDMA phone... Only two holes required, and that is for the CB mounting bracket, I have just mounted everything else off the CB bracket.

Sorry, been away !:D
NO find the cables aren't an issue as the mic clip is on the passenger side so it is only half the cable hanging. If it does annoy I poke it in to the "map" (or whatever they are supposed to be for!) slots. I don't use these for maps as I found most fall out off road at the most inoportune time!
