I have never owned a discovery bit always liked them. Is there any reason to buy pa D3 over a D4 2.7 lt. except price ? Would be used for touring not SERIOUS 4x4.
cheers

NO. The 2009 D3 is pretty close to a D4 but the interior isn't as nice IMHO.

Only the dash is different, everything else back is exactly the same - I prefer the D3 dash.

Seats are different - some prefer the bolstering on one or the other.

I think the D3 dash is more practical / versatile and like the external D4 upgrades better.

The D4 is an upgraded D3.
Many issues were sorted for the D4,although for some reason i have always liked the look of the D3 over the D4.

There's not many low-ks D3s left, compared to even three years ago when I was looking.

Edit: and be wary of the kms claimed - there's one on Carsales at the moment that's listed as 60,000 kms, but that's on the second motor ...

It does seem what is on the market all look to be high km cars today. Just goes to show how much preference the D3 and D4 gets for being used as the daily drive.

But D4 are getting on a bit, many are 10 yrs old, D3 up to 15.

Even at say a low 15K a year that’s still a lot of K’s although many would do a few more k,s a year than that.

Mine which is in the markets is one of the very few with lowish K on it around.

Which is probably the biggest difference right now, the average D4 has done 160K, whilst the average D3 is over 220K.

What others have said is all valid but the one thing I will add is that very few D3's were optioned with Bluetooth connectivity. All base model D4's came with it as standard. It may not be an issue for you but at least you are aware of it.

You could also consider something like this. Low kms. It would be a beautiful tourer. My tdv8 L322 certainly is, this would be better. The 4.2 SC V8 motor has a brilliant reputation for reliability. This car was about $200k when new and has all the fruit incl a factory rear diff locker. My family loves the heated seats even in a Qld winter. The ad says it also has digital radio, not sure about that. But who knows JLR packed all the options into them as they were so expensive. Not far from you. May be worth a look.

Yep, knowing what i know now, this would def be an option over the D4 3.0. Having said that, i love my D4 and has never let us down and always gotten us home. Cant complain at all, shes now 10yo, 203000km and still looks and goes great. The ducks nuts is a 3.0 SC. Such a shame the D4 did not come with the L322 motor....that would be the ultimate...

Agree with this. Both the knowing what I know now and the fact the the D4 is awesome bit. I looked at the RR's when I bought the D4 but lack of accessories put me off in the end. That RR would be a great car though.

Sure it maybe a nice car,but nothing like a D4.Lots of fruit, complicated, may mean issues.
For same sort of money, you could get a D4,which is larger, newer, and has more accessories available.
And probably just as comfortable, maybe with E diff, and the latest traction control tech.

Anyway,whatever rocks your boat.
Good luck with whatever you end up with.[biggrin]

Yes Paul that's all very sensible....but it's a tdv8 ie not a 'dodgy' variety of diesel engine😁

I agree the 3.6 tdv8 is a little under rated. But I was recommending the Jag 4.2 V8SC, in particular because of its reliability reputation.

My sister has a 2015 D4, and yes a very nice car & 8hp trans with TR has the edge over the 6hp trans.

There are supposedly1200 (iirc) differences between a D3 and a D4 and a lot weren’t just cosmetic.

However, there have been improvements within each model. eg each release of D4 was ‘better’ than the last. Traction control and stability control included.

All great cars though 😊

We owned both our D3 and D4 at the same time for five years and for long distance driving interstate we easily preferred the D3 over the D4 and our D4 is the very top spec car with all Disco options as standard including the top end optioned comfort soft leather seats.
The D3 had a far more comfortable ride which included believe it or not the seats, both Disco’s had Captains chairs which I prefer.

I to preferred the D3 dash, far more practical than the D4, I would not have moved my D3 on if it had not had a engine failure and in hindsight I should have spent the money and put another engine in it.

The D4 has proven to be far more reliable and with much lower maintenance costs than the D3 though, but I put most of that down to it being a V8 petrol which gives very few problems if properly maintained.

I’m noticing given the advancing age of the D3 the headliner material is separating especially from the tight inside curves above the 2nd row. Does it eventually fall and has anyone gone and had it repaired? I imagine taking out the roof panel is a solid weekend’s work.

I'd be taking it to a motor trimmer and ask for a quote.

I had this mob refurb our 2007 L322 and Peugeot head lining. They did a good job, but not cheap esp with sunroof. One thing they couldn’t do was sun visors. The material they used was probably better than original, but doesn’t quite match original trim on sun visors.

My folks just got mine done over in Mt Pleasant while I’m trapped in hookturnistan. Was $800 drive in / drive out including the a pillars and the pics look nice. Won’t get to see it in person until nov/dec. Had a new leather gear stick boot made too which looks schmick. That was a gift, so not in the headliner cost.

I was expecting a lot more, so I also asked for a quote if I did I the removal/install myself and would have saved $300. For that, they can do it!

I’m not clever enough to have come up with that one. I heard it elsewhere, so pass it on.

On my original post, now having been back a month or so the headliner on the D3 is pretty nice. Well worth the $800 to get it and the pillars done. Wish I’d done the visors as they are getting saggy now too (a bit like me). I’ll pop the off one day and get them done too.

Well, it beats all the other 'stan jokes about Victorizuela. Strictly speaking it's about Melbourne, but most rural Victorians think it's all about Melbourne anyway.
