Dodgy odometer readings

Hi,

Has anyone on here heard of discovery 3s or 4s with incorrect readings on the dash?

Ours has, but we knew it did when we bought it, the previous owner said the dash was replaced due to malfunction, and provided a rough guess of total km.

But a mate has recently bought a 4 that is reporting incorrectly, my understanding was that it was nearly impossible to "wind them back" (without replacing dash) is this correct?

The previous owner of our car said he tried to find someone to sync the readings in the ecu's but couldn't find anyone that could do it.

No, haven't heard of that at all. The odometer is managed by the ecu and that's not in the dash AFAIK. Removing or replacing the dash does not reset the odometer.

Replacing the ecu would, but my understanding is the ecu is specific to each vehicle and they cannot be exchanged easily and would require some sort of factory intervention. Theres something else going on there with incorrect odometer readings.

I know on our car there are a four different ecu's reporting km, they are:

Engine ecu
ABS ecu
dashboard ecu

These three are in sync with each other

The fourth ecu is the terrain response one, it is reporting completely different to the others, and is I believe the only accurate one on the car
The other three are about 300,000 km out!

I was told this happened when the dash was replaced, and I guess the dash ecu.

Might be worth an email to Gap James, assuming you have one, you could ask for the full ccf access as well as how to synchronise the speedo ecu's

Dash readout on my D3 is incorrect. I replaced the instrument cluster last year which is why its out. Gap informed me that there is a bug that prevents the dash ODO being updated when over 260,00km

Not correct according to a thread on Disco UK. ODO is stored in a chip in the dash module. There is a thread on Disco UK where they explain how to code the digital Range Rover dash with the VIN for security purposes (to get the car to start) and how to update the ODO to match the vehicle’s previous mileage.

I don't have the IID I had a Nanocom or two, one of which is very very very slowly making it's way back you Greece.

I'm not actually fussed about the incorrect display, the car is nearing 500.000 km now and I'll probably bee the last owner of it as a valuable going concern (although it's in very good condition) so the next owner will probably get it for $5k without much life left, all bets off , ymmv etc...

My main thinking was how common it is for incorrect mileage.

I went for a drive yesterday and hooked my mates new one up, 130.000 on odo...
308.000 on the terrain ecu

Is it not more likely that the terrain response ECU was replaced with a secondhand unit? I understand they can fail/rot on the connector [emoji2369]

Nah, previous owner was honest, car just has that many km, as regards my mates, again no, it's got too much wear on some cosmetic interior stuff to be 130k
