Evening All. Firstly I did do a search for info on this topic, but could find no viable posts that were on point.

I started cleaning up my newly acquired Perentie GS.
On inspection at purchase I noted previous owner had sprayed the axles, brake backing plates and surrounding areas with a red oxide coloured paint. On questioning he said it was to prevent rust. I knew that was untrue. Car was kept in a rural beachside area for last 4 years and it has definitely seen service on the odd beach or two. Some rust was visible under the offending paint. I scraped away some of the paint in the few obvious rusty areas with a knife and satisfied myself there was nothing fatal there and any rust damage could be dealt with.

Having got her home and gotten most of the paint off with acetone (it's aerosol.paint) and wire brushing, I see there is minor rust and some pitting on some parts of the axle housings, brake plates and prop shaft. Nothing serious, but I want to fix the girl up as best I can. Looking for recommendations on how to deal with this. Clean back to bare metal, apply a Kill Rust type paint and spray underside with fish oil or similar I am thinking. What do you more experienced lads think? As an aside, it is unlikely she will see a great deal more beach action. I live in a rural, inland area.

Cheers All. Any feedback much appreciated.

I have recently renovated a tractor and some implements, that had quite serious rust pitting in places, some of the pitting would be craters about 5mm diameter. I used a wire wheel brush on grinder where I could get to it, and manually wire brushed in the tighter places. Then used a rust converter/primer product, there are several brands available. I have used the rust converter before, but found the rust coverter/primer a better product. Can just brush it on easily and it dries to a black colour and doesn't need painting straight away. I have treated things with it and not painted for few months and no rust has come back.

The one I used was 'Quik Rust Converter and Primer'.

I've got a heap of new brake backing plates here that came with some stuff I got at the auctions. Send me a PM if you are interested in them.
