Check power steering pump belt and then start engine and have someone move the steering wheel, and see if your getting Hydraulic fluid from the return pipe back into the reservoir. If so the problem could be the rack, any oil leaks there or any of the hoses ?

Thanks Laurie.
Checked the reservoir with the engine running, nothing going back into it.
Belt looks ok.
When i start the car, for a couple of seconds the steering has power.
I think some power is there as its still driveable, but it takes two hands to get the steering wheel moving.
Cheers Paul.

If no return, it sounds like the pump is failing; I don't know if the equivelent BMW had the same pump, but you should be able to pick one up easily enough. I don't know if a rebuild is possible, I'll check and let you know.

Also lookup about the servotronic valve and see if it applies ! Does high revs make a difference ? Sometimes rubber from the hoses breaks down and can get stuck in the valve and system.

Any ideas where i can get the servotronic valve from ? Apart from the main dealers.
Have sourced a power steering pump from the UK.
Full fat in the UK have pointed to the pump or valve as being the common things that seem to happen to power steering.

Can you list the maker if known and the serial number for your pump. Should be Bosch QVB000230. Some of the units you can buy a rebuild/seal kit for; if your interested. If not this appears to be a great deal.

RANGE ROVER L322 3.0 TD6 NEW POWER STEERING PUMP ASSEMBLY QVB000230 (2002-2006) | eBay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-L322-3-0-TD6-NEW-POWER-STEERING-PUMP-ASSEMBLY-QVB000230-2002-2006/123940571221?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOME SPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20190606144518%26meid% 3D776aa082d3fb4ae89ba4a351d9b2ca47%26pid%3D101072% 26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D253600133866%26itm%3D12 3940571221%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2546172%26al gv%3DDefaultOrganic&_trksid=p2546172.c101072.m2109)

Thats around A$265 delivered brand new , you would be lucky to pickup a 2nd hand; let alone recon unit for that here in my opinion! as long as it is OEM ?

Cheers Laurie.
I do have a pump coming from England.
The servotronic valve is what i need now.
Is there an aftermarket product that you know of ?

It's a ZF Part !

This is the LR Part Number: QFW500040, I can't cross reference it with a BMW ? part number, but a ZF steering specialist might be able ! Can be brought here for $292 [bigsad] unfortunately; unless they could but it in the same box as the pump from the UK which would be a substantial saving [thumbsupbig]

Car booked in for steering problem, and brake change.
On the morning before going into the mechanic , i had to brake hard and slightly nudged a fixed concrete post in a car park.
turned the ignition off to inspect the damaged......nothing...just a bent number plate, get back in car, started up and power steering back and better than it ever was.....i can turn the wheel with one finger...
What happened ???????

Any crap in the power steering reservoir ? You might have had a partial blockage which freed its self with the sudden stop/knock [bigwhistle] Just to be sure I would change the fluid anyway. Drain the reservoir, clean best you can; add new fluid and flush the system into a container till only new fluid is being returned, then reattach return line to the reservoir and top up.

My mechanic did drain the fluid and said it looked murky.
Its very light to turn now.
Cheers Paul.
