View Full Version : How to remove Cam Pulley seal? And Inner Splined Crank Pulley?

Hi all,

In the middle of my first Timing Belt change, all going well to this point.. After reading advice on this forum to replace the Cam Pulley seal, I’ve pulled off the pulley wheel but that seal is jammed in there.

What’s the best way of removing it without damaging the shaft? I’ve tried small and large screwdrivers with a thin piece of rubber between them and the shaft and I’ve destroyed the seal but it ain’t movin. Im worried I’ll damage the shaft if I keep going like I am. Any tips on how to get it out?

ALSO something I've overlooked is how to remove the inner splined Crankshaft Pulley? I've got a new one ready to go with both seals. Is it only the woodruff key that is holding it in place? Is it just a matter of pulling on it and it will eventually give? Or is there a special tool required? I've given it a good yank but it's also not moving.

Advice?

Much thanks in advance,

Dave

I’m assuming 200/300tdi

Stubborn seal - try running a couple of PK screws into the seal at 12 and 6 o’clock
Pry the screw heads and lever it out

If the crank pulley has not been off for a while it might need a good hydraulic puller - but yes it is only secured by an inner woodruff

What’s your location?

Thanks for the reply Steve.

Screws is genius - I'll give that a go in the morning.

I don't have a hydraulic puller and Im guessing it's not a good idea to get a lever in behind there and try to pry it out?

I'm in Preston VIC.

UPDATE:

Self-tappers worked. First one pulled straight out but using pliers and levering off the shaft was eventually able to pop the seal. Photos attached.

As for splined crank pulley, I noticed today the 3 thread holes on the front face and I'm guessing these are for a puller so off to the tool shop tomorrow to see if they have anything that fits.

I bloody hope so.

Thanks mate, I was able to pick up a kit from the local tool shop which has done the job. It came off easy in the end. Hope the new one goes on easy too.

Hope you're replacing the woodruff key(s) when doing it all up again too.
