Legalities of Under Trailer Tray Spare Tyre Mount

Hello All,

Are there any legal restrictions that people know of about mounting a spare tyre under a trailer's tray? Apart from everything being held securely that is?

I have a flat-top trailer and there is at least a 200 mm vertical gap between the trailer floor and the main rails that support the trailer bed. Plus, there is lots of space horizontally between the main rails.

I just bought a tool box to mount on my trailer's drawbar. As things happen this takes up most of the space where the spare tyre is currently mounted. The spare tyre lays flat on the drawbar and is secured by two bolts.

I am considering the idea of visiting a local wrecker and grabbing one of the under tray spare tyre mounting systems from a tray-back ute.Then fixing this system to under my trailer. Being a flat-top trailer the tray is high off the ground, so there is ready access to be able to check the tyre 's air pressure and being able to remove the tyre.

I do not want to store the spare tyre in the load area of the trailer. Been there done that. Get a flat tyre and everything has to be untied and the load shifted to get access to the spare. Or you have to shovel gravel or manure away to get access to the tyre.

What do you reckon - would mounting the spare tyre under the trailer legally solve my storage issue?

Hello Paul and Others,

To establish a baseline asking price, I had a quick look on eBay and found what some wreckers are charging for the spare wheel winch as second-hand units. I then found a trailer mob who sell a generic unit new which is advertised as "To Suit Caravans and Trailers". The new unit's price is less than most of the Holden, Ford or Toyota used parts suppliers. Most of who then sell the crank handle separately!

I will see how our local mobs compare to the eBayers and the new generic unit.

Do you need a winch...

Given a car trailer is pretty close to the ground what about a couple of bars/pipe hinged with a bolt on the opposite side....like what’s on some vans.

With good tyres on the trailer flat tyre don’t happen often.

It's all good to do, I have seen nothing in the NCOP VSB1 that doesnt allow that. We have just finished a 3 way tipper with spare under the tray using a spare wheel winch, the same as you have described. No dramas with new trailer inspection and registration.

Hello All,

I looked around a couple of different online suppliers - wreckers for rule of thumb pricing. Then I checked out some caravan and trailer suppliers. I found out that I could get a generic brand new complete unit - including the handle -for under the amount wreckers were asking for second hand.

Plus, the wreckers frequently sell the crank handle as a separate item without the winch!

As WK&O said a system like is used on hiace's with a simple hinged frame and one bolt to hold it all up.

I moved the spare wheel on one of my old caravan's to underneath using the same Hiace frame design. great idea.

Hello Don,

Wow that spare tyre is not going to fall off is it! I have a similar amount of space available on my trailer.

However, with the system I bought, I only need a reinforcing plate and two - not sure what diameter bolts, washers and nylock nuts - that go through holes that are 70 mm apart. There you go one spare tyre all hooked up and out of the way. No welding required. Oh, plus a hole drilled through the back of the trailer so the crank handle can pass through into the winch winder.
