Gday all,
I’m updating my d2 soon, we have a d3, was thinking of D4 but, now I have seen some good km, claimed well maintained RRS. I know it’s personal choice, but is the suspension the same as in can be adjusted access hieght and off road hieght?
Is there a great deal of room difference in back and can back seats be folded down in RRS, towing capacity is same 3500kg braked, is motor the same in both if both 3 ltr diesel?
Although the v8 diesel is appealing.

I thought an RRS was just a Disco in tight leather pants, big gold chains and it's hat on backwards. [bigrolf]

Huge difference in amount of room, virtually no aftermarket accessories for the RRS.

Whatever suits your needs.

Depends on what you want to do - the RRS is 5.5" shorter in the wheelbase so this shows up in rear luggage space - also the slope of the rear hatch further reduces the load capacity - however for one or two the space is fine - with the rear seats down I can sleep in the rear.

However as a touring vehicle - the boxy fridge shape of the D3/4 is more usable.

Yes there is the 3.6 TDV8 in the RRS and the Supercharged V8s that are not in the D3/D4 - as far as the 3.0 TDV6 - the RRS only has the 180kw version.

EAS is the same, lots less room in second row, no third row in L320, rear load area looks much smaller. Not sure of the tune in the 3.0l diesels, but I thought that the RRS gets more Nm (700 vs 600).

Yes just 2 of us & dog, towing 22 ft caravan, we will keep d3 as wife loves it. I don’t think the RRS can take a bull bar or am I misinformed there?
I can get a rear wheel carrier same as d3 as we have a HF radio aerial to mount as well.
I’ll keep pondering,
Rob

The D3/D4 bar will fit on RRS but it is not certified for the RRS.

Zilch has a nice RRS with a bar on his.

Etiher or both. I have a sport. Always liked them. Thought it was a disco with a different body. But as others have said it is shorter and has less room in back and rear seats.
Other item not said. Less room for front passenger seat does not go back as far. Seats need to be slightly forward to fold down back seats. Center console and radio slope takes up room. Discos seem to have more thigh room.
For me unless you prefer one over the other take the best car for the price you can get. Remember all sport 3.0L are SDV6 so has more power than TDV6. Better car is an 8 speed 13+my. But is out of the timeline you stated.
Good luck love mine.

I had exactly the same choice, but with an MY2011 D4 and RRS. I purchased (and still have) the D4 - mainly based on the huge difference in rear luggage capacity. There is simply no comparison - the D4 is streets ahead of the RRS in this aspect.
Other than that though - they are virtually the same vehicle. Yes - a steel bullbar designed for the D4 will bolt straight onto the equivalent model RRS - there are plenty of them out there with one fitted. Most other accessories are the same - if they will bolt onto a D4, it is highly likely that they will also fit the RRS. One advantage you may find in the RRS is a wider choice of engines - the TDV8 available in the RRS is a bloody nice bit of gear - not available in the D4.

So - other than the amount of room in the back and possibly a different choice of engine, it's pretty much a personal choice. Personally, I think that the D4 is a better looking vehicle with more of a "Land Rover" presence - but others will have a different view. I like the RRS, but my main reason for going with the D4 at the time was the amount of room in the back - plus mine was a demo model and I was offered a slightly better deal on it than on a similar vintage RRS that they had in stock at the time.

Good luck with whatever you choose though - I'm sure you'll be happy with either.

Thanks, pretty good feedback much appreciated for sure.
Is that a tough boy rear wheel carrier( I might have brand wrong) no issues with it BMKal ?
With the d2 it was for room, as we had a pop top and more stuff went in back of car, now we have a full van less will be in back of car, but I still need to fit uhf and HF radio so unsure of room in dash area of RRS, I am only going on pics from car sales as none for sale up this way.
The v8 motor could be a factor just cos.
Thanks again for comments been great reading.

My choice would be the MY10 tdv8 RRS as it’s such a nice motor (I have a 2008 tdv8 RRV) and MY10 updated interior is also very nice/modern.

But if cargo space, a very little more under body clearance, and more accessories are important then D4.

How much ground clearance would we be talking?

There is no difference if the same size wheels and tyres are used. The reason the RRS had slightly lower ground clearance on the showroom floor is because it had a slightly lower tyre profile as delivered.

When you put the same size tyres on the RRS as a D4 because of the shorter RRS wheelbase, in theory it would be slightly better offroad because of its slightly better ramp over angle and slightly lower weight.

GOE were only Compomotive brand which are still available but nothing fits over the Brembo disc brake and calliper package I understood. Same for Tuffant.

I would love to stand corrected. I thought the TDV8 brakes were even bigger than the SDV6 size and nothing fitted certainly none of the Tuffants

My L322 3.6 tdv8 with 18” Compomotives.

I had a look at the online DBA catalogue, which might be a reasonable guide (as callipers will be different). It indicates 360mm front rotors for my tdv8 L322 and both RRS 2010 tdv8/tdv6 diesels. So it’s possible Compos may fit RRS tdv8.

The front brakes on a 4.4 TDV8 (MY11-12) are indeed larger than the 3.0's and Compomotives don't fit.

Microcat shows the same 2-piston sliding calliper for the MY10 RRS TDV8, 5.0 na and the TDV6. The 5.0 SC has Brembo that appears to have 6 pistons.

FWIW I am one of the few running a 2011 RRS(after a 2007 d3), towing an off-road Caravan (2.2t)...

on the road since June... been to Cameron’s corner, Birdsville, the dig tree, Haddons corner, Lawn hill np, The cape, parts of the OTT(towing the van too which was fun), etc...

everything said to date rings true...

just wanted to add that I’ve fitted into the rrs:
- a single drawer(it fitted with 5mm to spare)...
- a fridge (without slide, and yes it is a Pia to get into)
- uhf - GME tx3350
amongst others...

reason for the rrs... it was cheaper than the equivalent D4... and it meets my needs as the van holds most of my stuff...

cheers,
AP

I have a 08MY tdv8 RRS and have been on some offroad trips with friend that had a D4.

D4 had heaps more space in the back but we still had plenty of space for our gear.

The RRS is shorter and so has better ramp over, ie at the same height settings the D4 occasionally grounded in the middle where we didn't. Not by much though.

The RRS has ediff and the D4 didn't. On steep loose rocky hills, the D4 would start to spin rear wheel and needed a bit of extra throttle before sorting out traction, while the RRS just smoothly went up.

Having driven both cars, the D4 is more comfortable, the RRS handles better on the road. ie the RRS comfort level is un RangeRover-ish.

I checked with NSW RTA, if a bullbar doesn't specifically have label fitted saying it is made for a particular model car it is not legally approved. Even though the Disco bars will fit the RRS and some people use them, there may be issues if it comes to an accident and insurance. :-(

I have the compomotive 18" wheels obtained from GOE on my 3.6 tdv8. I have seen somewhere else selling the compomotive wheels now but don't recall who. There is also someone selling steel 18" to suit.

Wheel carrier and long range tank on mine are both "Outback Accessories" - made in Perth, WA. Only issue with wheel carrier is that the wheel sits a little further to the right than some others, requiring an additional tail light to be fitted as you block vision of the OEM right hand side lights. I don't find this a problem though, and I believe that it gives you better rear vision through the central rear vision mirror. The additional "tail light" that comes with the carrier is a pretty crappy square trailer light with bayonet mount globes - I replaced this with the LED unit on it now for better reliability and to keep the appearance more in line with the OEM lights.

As AFT mentioned the RRS seems cheaper with lower kms than a d4 that I have seen, with sellers claiming perfect servicing as per Carsales adds. So I’m still undecided but great reading and very appreciative of everyone’s time.

When you compare apples with apples you will find the RRS is still more expensive than the equivalent Disco. Remembering that from 2013 you will be comparing the D4 with the L494 RRS not the L320 RRS.

Yes, the callipers have the same part number as the 6-pots as on my L322 and people have demonstrated that the Compos don't fit a 4.4 TDV8 L322.

I remember at the time the runout 2013 L320s were being advertised at 80k d.a. The base L320 is still well equipped.

And have a MY 13.5 L320. Plenty around with some extra kit (the only additions of substance were the steering wheel paddles and perforated leather)

Hi I've had 2010 D4 with the 2.7 diesel, 2010 RRS TDV8, and currently 2010 D4 3.0 diesel (HSE for what it's worth) - and given them all a decent amount of offroad curry including camper trailer in the Flinders Ranges etc. I think the fact of the matter is that the RRS started life as a Disco, and was compromised rather than improved on, for offroad applications.

The TDV8 is exquisite to drive, torque for days whether it's on the road or blasting out of a creek bed. In the Vic high country I never found a spur steep or rocky enough that it wouldn't just walk up at 1200 rpm. Which is just as well, because yes, 19 and 20 inch rims are your only options (unless you want to stick to pre-2010 update, which is a suite of other changes to be aware of). And the special snow chains required for the front on 20s, that avoid the tiny gap between the rubber and strut, cost over $700. The TDV8 is also over 100kg heavier, which comes out of your payload (down to 530kg for the RRS, from something like 860kg in the D4 2.7). The TDV8 is also thirstier. I averaged 25l/km over four days in the Vic High Country. Also worth noting for the TDV8 is that certain things like the front lower control arms are heavier duty, therefore cost a heap more when it inevitably comes time to replace the bushes/arms. The rear tailgate isn't split fold and I missed it every time I opned the back - you really need to check how it'll clear whatever your tow set up is. But all that said, you're talking touring with a van more than offroading, and it can work. You just need to be really clear about whether it's a logical or emotional decision. The D4 feels like every car you'll ever need (remember the ad?!), while the RRS is the car you just love despite all it's compromises.

In short, I'd always wanted a V8 Rangie, and absolutely loved the RRS, best car I ever had the privelege of tipping money into. I'll never buy another one! :D
