Hi All,

Ive had my Defender since 2002, but it has been unregistered for the last four years, and been used basically as a tractor at the property south of Wollongong. It has had a problem with the battery draining over a few days, so I bought a new one, but it went flat after a month, so I have some sort of leakage there. But, my main problem is the clutch - it goes flat to the floor without any resistance. Could this be related to the battery? It has never happened before when the battery was flat. Or is it an entirely separate issue? If so, any suggestions?

Definitely unrelated
Charging system is electrical
Clutch is hydraulic over mechanical
It probably your clutch slave cylinder
Try refilling the clutch reservoir and pumping the clutch pedal

Clutch is separate issue, check fluid level...sometimes you can get away with re-filling and pumping the peddle as a short term fix.

Suspect it’ll be your master cylinder.

Thank you Phil B. I will give it a shot.

Great! I pumped the clutch slowly a few times this morning - and nothing. But, I just went out and pumped it a few times fast . . . . and, I’m back in business. Thanks so much to both of you.

I would suggest that won't be a permanent fix, so look around the clutch components for leakage of fluid, that will give you clues to where the problem lies. As others have said, clutch master or slave are likely to be the cause.
