On the Series IIA Box Is it possible to convert the 1st and 2nd gears to synchro, or easier to fit a fully synchro box out of a later model.
I am thinking that mine has not done that much work, so may have to try and recalled some past gear changing skills if all too difficult.
Whats the opinion?

If the 2A box is in good knick, use it. If you can get your hands on a S3 late (suffix C/D ??) preferably ex-mil box, it's the only other good alternative.
All the series boxes are slow in the syncro department and fragile if you hammer them. The 2A box is the hardiest of them. HTH.

........................... & an E Suffix is supposedly the best of the 2As.
You'll soon pick up lost skills, Rob. :D It's a Land Rover ffs.

It is not possible (it probably is, but for practical purposes it isn't) to convert 1st & 2nd to synchro. Second may be possible, as it is constant mesh, but definitely not first, and in any case changing to a S3 box is far easier.
BUT the 2a box, particularly if late production, is generally considered to be a better gearbox than the S3 one, and it really is very easy to change gears with a bit of practice (although I am probably not a good advisor on this as the cars I learnt to drive on (Swift and Reo) had neither synchromesh nor constant mesh).

Thanks to all who replied. I learnt to drive in New Guinea and some of the vehicles I had were not noted for being user friendly. Seeing as how I am trying to keep all things as original as possible I may have to stay with the original box. Reputation is that they are as tough as nails. Just have to hone up on my de-clutching skills, :(

CRASH BOX
you mean that all these years I should have double shuffled in 1and 2 :D :D
The Series 2a gearbox was by far the better box, as the Ser.3 gears were shortened down to be able to fit the Syncro Hubs in as well as the main shaft being in one piece, so if you stripped a gear you had to replace the lot, with the 2,2a, the gears were seperate and could be replaced individually, ;) It won't take too long to get into the swing of the non-syncro 1st and 2nd, you just change on the sound of the engine , you just don't rush it, it's like marching, 1 clutch in, into neutral, 2 clutch out, 3 clutch in, into 2nd,:) 1,2,3, 1,2,3, just like waltzing:D
stay with the 2a box:)

After practice I used to change from 3rd to 2nd faster in my old series 2a than the series 3 I replaced it with. This was even when driving on soft sand. I never bogged the 2a but the series 3 was easier to bog due to slower gear changes.

I agree, it's just a bit of practice to get used to a particular vehicle & not to rush the change.
!st to 2nd can even be done without using the clutch if you get your revs right, & it ain't all that hard. Who needs synchro?:D
