View Full Version : Cheap radiators?

Hi all, having been poking under the bonnet of the p38 I noticed that along the top seam of the radiator (where the tabs are folded over) are little spots of dried red coolant. Could this be time for a new radiator?

Jumping onto ebay, there seems to be plenty for less than $200. Seems a little too cheap for such a critical component. Has anyone rolled the dice on one of these? Can anyone vouch for another budget option?

Cheers

I got one from Mario and Heather 3 or 4 years ago. Had no problems, and the price was very good.

I have been sourcing parts from 4wd industries -they have a range of selections for P38 - Only complaint is they seem to be slow with the dispatch of "in stock items". they are located in NSW

Mario at Roverlord can get G&M radiators made in Glascow for D2 so I would think he could get them for P38.

I have one in my D2 and they seem good quality but are more expensive than Chinese cheapies.

I just paid $795 for a genuine radiator in Victoria. Plus install.
I'm told there was less than $100 difference between the genuine and an aftermarket one.

Nought an ebay cheapie for my Ford ( old one split between the coolant and the trans cooler, which is fun ), and it seems fine. Thing is though, the Ford never strays beyond the range of my RACV Total Care membership. No way would I trust my Disco to one when I want to go to the VHC, let alone a desert. So, I guess my point is, how do you use the car? Oh, and a Ford Barra is in no way fragile. P38A V8, not so much.

Can I ask where you got it? A Land Rover dealer I assume? Genuine out of stock in the UK (with JLR Classic anyway).

When I changed over the engine in my P38 I replaced the radiator as well (2016)

Radiator Engine Water Coolant - Petrol - Oem - Range Rover Mk2 P38A 4.0 4.6 V8 Models 1994-1998 1995-2002 (https://p38spares.com/en/range-rover-p38-1994-2002-radiators-fans-pumps-hoses-parts-from-allmakes-britpart-bearmach-and-genuine-lr-we-ship/5708-oem-radiator-gems-engine-water-coolant-petrol-range-rover-mk2-p38a-40-46-v8-models-1994-1999.html)

I used that part and it has not failed on me. We do not get simpson desert like temperatures over here though, 35c is the most my beastie has to contend with but all in all, it just works :)

Cheers,
-P

I just got an email from JLR Classic parts (official LR factory parts source for what are deemed 'classic' Land Rover products, incl the P38) that for the 99-on Thor radiator (p/n PCC106850), "Unfortunately, Jaguar Land Rover cannot supply these any longer and hasn't produced them for some time."

So I am just going to take a punt on whatever the best-qualityaftermarket radiator Karcraft has (I think I'll replace the water pump and viscous coupling while I'm at it).

I am also going to replace the gylcol green coolant with OAT red, probably Nulon. I will do a flush and then fill/drain with demin water x2 before changing to OAT. This to make sure there is no mixing of coolant types.

After reading so many threads on OAT, I have concluded that the most common-sense reason for using it is that it's a nice colour. :) Sorry, maybe I have just been reading too many long winded, meandering arguments for and against OAT. It comes down to it is what LR recommended for the Thor P38. I like that reason, even though others might not.

Good to hear Mario, if I can't source one easily here (Sydney) I'll get in touch.
