Having troubles searching for threads using tapatalk on my iPhone, while kicking back on Moreton Island.

Feel free to link them here........

I recall reading posts about OEM heavy duty suspension, using 130 components, counties having higher GVM etc.

Really interested in members journeys that have completed a GVM upgrade. Is it somewhat achievable??

Have pretty much finished the build for you two year road trip and given we are heavily loaded for Moreton I rolled over a weigh bridge and we are hovering around GVM.

1280 front (1200)
1800 rear (1850)
3080 total (3050)

Weight bridge wasn’t one of your normal full length bridges it was a smaller that only does on axle group at a time (semi trailer) I’m assume during the week it’s either manned by somebody who adds the axle groups or there is a program that does it for the drive. it was unmanned at the time but should be accurate given its location

Don't use TapaTalk then. Use a browser. I use Chrome on my iPhone (I don't like TT).

I’ve looked into this myself, as in full touring trim we are getting near GVM ( about 100kg under).

From what I gathered, the factory HD option upgrades the GVM from 3050kg to 3500kg. This consists of the HD (Wolf) wheels, HD (130) springs up front and the addition of the 130 helper springs in the rear (if its a 5 seater, the 7 seater has softer springs in the rear).

That bit is easy. However, the problem is that apparently there are some extra stiffeners added to the chassis. I couldn’t find any information on these.

I never went any further with it as I didn’t want to get any heavier, just wanted a bit more overhead. I already had HD springs in the front and airbags in the rear, so the suspension part was essentially done. I’d like to go the Wolf wheels as well, just because I like them, but these will add extra weight which defeats the purpose.

I’m going to ask the obvious question, can you lose 30kg?

Cheers,
Jon

Maybe a low iron diet would do the trick! :whistling:

Cheers, doesn’t seem to be anybody that’s has followed the whole process through.

Can we trim 30kg?......probably not as we hitting the road for two years and not towing and want a few creature comforts.

the sill tank and hiking gear isn’t in the numbers above so that maybe another 100kg.

Any upgrade post rego is about $7k to have engineered and signed off.

Cools, be interested in chatting to somebody that’s actually done it....more so what components tje need upgrade or changing

Cost wise not overly bothered at the moment given our total investment in the trip.

Granted it was over 7 years ago, i had my GVM upgraded to 3500kg (TD5 110) by changing my coils to a higher rate and matching shocks. I was running D1 alloys at the time. No mention of chassis stiffeners or thicker gauge chassis rails (i think that is actually a wives tale because of all the posts i've read on the topic, its been keyboard speculation but i've read nothing concrete from someone in the actual know (that is LR engineering). Can't speak for current practices on GVM upgrades. Engineering has tightened up a bit in the past 5 years. I doubt I would get my 130 engineered now days, 5 years ago not so hard.

I would add sway bars to the upgraded suspension compnentry.
Maybe give the ultimate suspension a call??
They are in Ingleburn, NSW

I have a factory HD 110 cab chassis.

There is some gusseting of the chassis as well as the suspension changes

Have an engineering hopefully getting back today with what’s required.......

He engineered my bagged rear.

Well after a lengthy chat with an engineer it appears one offs in Queensland are becoming less and less due to latest legislation and one off testing is expensive as there is only one facility in Queensland.

He was impressed that I my bagged rear engineered as many interpret the rules as not requiring a blue plate. Apparently bagged rears are a focus point for the inspector due to the increased numbers of conversions happening g

He was also Land Rover friendly i.e. used to own Landy.

I could seek a second opinion but I think I’ll let it slide.

Meeting with an engineer on Monday, there is an chance I’ll drive home legal........with a new GVM of 3300

I think I have everything that’s required.

Why not 3500kg like a 130?

Why not 3500kg like a 130?

Well.......after ringing around they all seemed to indicated that 10% is is the number for one off upgraded, there was a term they used for the approved off the shelf kits for the mass produced late model cars. This requires full engineering, land change, brake test etc....I think. I didn’t want to question too much. It’s the only queensland company prepared to have a look.

We don’t need 3500kg, last trip we were 30kg over and I guessing there will be an an extra 100kg added before we depart ~3180

Might even be able to fit Wolf Rims, been holding off due to the weight of them.

I think I have ticked all the boxes they have requested. Some roadworthy items are getting addressed today while the locker is being installed.

A little unsure if civvie delivered TD5 110 had rear sway bar fitted as standard, mine has a front seat bar fitted. I said mine was a special order and didn’t have a rear sway bar fitted.

And there is the age old debate if my dynamic rims need the little spacer rings between hub and rim.

Good move, I had everything engineer approved and signed off for on mine (for tyres/lift, not GVM), so diffs, axles, brakes, springs, speedo correction, , wheels, tyres, guards and everything that weas done and which formed the engineers report. If they have an inspection blitz, I should be pretty safe.

Only way to go if you like your house [emoji3]

So many roll the dice.

Thats exactly it. As you know, we certainly worked over the rules at the time, but made sure it complied.

Done and dusted.....

One little hiccup which needed a discussion....

part of the testing was a handbrake test while moving which I wasn’t aware off and he don’t realise the defer had a transmission brake. ****.....

I’d never been though a brake test, I was in passenger seat hanging onto the machine, I believe it’s the same machine they use in NSW annually.

He was very surprised how good the brakes pulled up the defer.....had heaps up our sleeve.

Hey W&KO I hope you managed to get your big trip in with all the COVID turmoil. Can I ask where in Brisbane you got your GVM increased by 300kg and what was required. Thanks.

My bad, I didn’t see this question, probably a little late now.

GVM upgrade worth nothing when transferring Rego to Tassie……not recognised down here.
