Hi team, having some dramas and want to pick your minds please on next steps...

I've got a 2008 FL2 HSE - 3.2L Si6 petrol, I've had it for about 5 years, has 145km great service history (probably city kms as was bought in Sydney).

We moved to the Northern Rivers and clocking up 500 km p/w and started needing to replace quite a lot in the following 12m (starter, alternator, etc etc)

Then we had breakdown on the motorway last year, when NRMA picked her up there was no coolant. Worked with the local Euro mechanic, replaced the PCV, and thermostat. But was still losing coolant.

Had the coolant tested and positive for Hydrocarbons. Started working with a local Landrover specialist who was recommended. Compression test revealed cylinder 6 pressure loss (150psi, versus 190-230psi for cylinders 1-5).

So it's either a cracked head gasket, cracked cylindar head/casing. We tried the sealant gunk hack, didn't work.

Mechanic reckons that the petrol Volvo engines in these are know to be prone to cracking heads in these situations and that it needs a replacement motor.

Motor he found was about $4.5k for a 2nd hand motor with 90km. Then probably ~$2k for labour (FL2's need to take the front off to get the engine out).

Do you guys think it's worth taking the head of to have the gasket and head xrayed in case it's just the gasket?

Is it worth the pain of spending $6-8k replacing the motor on a $10-12k car?

Also does anyone have suggestions for sourcing FL2 petrol engines? Do the Volvo XC motors fit in these?

Love my FL2 but it's turning into a money pit.

Thanks in advance for your help! Mike

If you are looking at replacing the engine why not try one of the head gasket fix in a bottle.

What do you have to loose.

@FisherX - thanks Yes tried it already, lasted a week then started losing coolant again. If I drive ~15min on the open road I lose about 500ml of coolant.

How handy are you with the spanners? Could you remove the head? Get it tested?
