D5 Couple of Questions

Having owned series of Discoveries through out the years and moving onwards and upwards I am looking into the D5 now.

Couple of observations - I don't know much about Adblue (questions to come) and real life experiences with the diesel D5.
Prices for 2nd hand D5 are still way up there and not at all cheap (for me anyway), shame when the D4's can be had from $20k onwards.
Trying to search for a D5 is harder in carsales etc, not listed as a D5 only options for D3, D4 so need to search for specific years like 2016 onwards to find the D5 but then they throw up heaps of 'discovery sports' models so not the easiest of LR to find 2nd hand
I think the last time I looked the cheapest D5 was around $70k perhaps from memory

Q2. I understand it gets topped up at service time, but where do you usually source Adblue from
Q3. What price do you usually pay for the Adblue
Q4. How often do you need to top up with Adblue

Finally if I drove return trip from Sydney to Melb or Brisbane 2000kms trip would I need to carry Adblue with me in the D5 (how much) to top up. Would you consider buying the D5 petrol model to not mess about with the Adblue or is it not a big deal breaker. Why is there so many 2nd hand D4 on the market and yet hardly any D5 it would seem.

Ok finally can you buy an ARB or OL bullbar for the D5, I have only seen the ECB (not a fan) of this style of bar? thanks in advance

A1. Adblue is not flammable, and it keeps, but why would you store it? It's available at so many servos at the pump these days. Most modern Euro 5 and up trucks use it. Diesel Golfs have used it for years now.
A2. See A1. the stuff is available all over. Sure, not all servos have it, in the same way that not all servos have diesel or LPG.
A3. Less than a dollar at the bowser. I recall buying pallecons of the stuff for 70c pl when most servos would sell you a 10 litre bottle for $25.00, but those days are gone. Sure, some servos still do that, so go somewhere else.
A4. Can't answer that. The Scania I drove way back needed an AdBlue fill at the same time as a fuel fill, but that ain't the same as a D5.

AdBlue is simply urea. Nothing to see here, nothing to be worried about. Only thing, the Scania would detect an empty tank, or a tank that had been filled with diluted AdBlue, and de-rate the engine. Reckon LR will be the same.

I certainly would not rethink my choice based on the need for AdBlue.

For question 4, this depends.

Currently my range to empty on the LR App shows as 4,800km with a top up now taking 11L). When not towing, this is reasonably accurate but if I attach a 2T van to the back, the car drinks about twice as much AdBlue as it normally does. You do get warnings on the dashboard at 2,500km to say the level is getting low, from memory this is a white warning at first then at 1,500 it changes to an orange warning. I don't know when it drops down to a red warning, I've not let it get that low.

I don't carry any AdBlue but if I were to do a lap of Australia with the van in tow I would take a few liters of the stuff just in case.

I have a 2 litre bottle which has the right fitting to top up AdBlue which I bought from Land Rover.

This is for emergencies.

Cheapest way to buy AdBlue is buy an empty twenty litre container & fill up at truck stop, buying it prepackaged is expensive.

Not sure if you can buy some sort of adaptor that will let you refill straight from AdBlue bowser!!

My Wife's VW Passat can be filled at the bowser don't know why Landrover did not do this!!

I buy a 10L container from super cheap or repco for ~$42. The SD4 does ~ 500k per litre.

I use a 1.89L bottle with the base cut away, screwed into the filler, then just pour the DEF into it. Takes 5 minutes to fill 10L.

The D5 holds 18l of AdBlue. when not towing that gives at least 9000km of range. When towing my 18.6 OffRoad Zone RV weighing 3.3t fully loaded my 2019 SD6 uses 1l per 100km, which is not good. This gives a range of 1800km if towing. I carry 10l when towing and an extra empty 10l container. I fill both at a truck stop bowser when necessary and then fill the tank later. The app tells you how much you need to fill the tank, which is handy to know.

You need a magnetic adaptor to fill anything including containers from a bowser. This is supposed to be available from the counter but I have bought my own from Repco because they are sometimes missing. This adaptor is required to prevent people filling fuel tanks with AdBlue. Trucks don't need it because the bowser is designed to fill a truck tank, which automatically activates the magnetic valve and lets it flow freely. The adaptor just simulates the truck AdBlue filler so it doesn't just dribble out slowly from the bowser.
