View Full Version : Are 19 inch wheels better & how to tell if wheels will fit?

Hi,
we have a MY2012 RRS 3.0l SVD6, it does not have the Brembo brakes. Currently has 20 inch rims, tyres are 275/40/R20 (road tyres). We are planning a trip up to Karijini, Millstream/Chichester, across to Exmouth etc, which will involve some unsealed roads, which depending on conditions & last grading can be pretty corrugated & have sharp rocks apparently.

We've been considering getting a set of second hand rims with a better tyre for rough terrain, but are confused as to what would fit/how to tell.

I've found a set off a 2002 Range Rover Vogue, can anyone tell me if they'd fit? Or the easiest way to find out for sure? We don't go 4Wd-ing in this vehicle, but are worried about shredding sidewalls.
Thanks.

Those 19" rims won't fit but D4 19" rims will fit over the brakes. There's a few 19" AT tyres that are half reasonable for outback travel but a set of after-market 18" rims that fit over the brakes in either alloy or steel would provide a far greater range of tyres either standard overall size or slightly larger. However AT tyres in 265/50R20 are available which might be a reasonable, low cost option that is satisfactory for your use.

Have a look at this thread..20" AT tyres - anyone have long term review? (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/283605-20-tyres-anyone-have-long-term-review.html)

Thanks for the reply Graeme, very helpful. So our brake calipers are bigger, even though they're not the Brembo ones?

Yes they're bigger than those fitted to early RRs.

I just happened to be looking at tyres for a friends RRS same as yours.

If you can fit a 275/65x20 , there are quite a few options available. Jax tyres can advise.

you will have approx 180mm sidewalls with those.

thats all I have on my Ranger with Falken AT's and I go bush on some of the worst roads several times a year.

ps I'm only on 17s not 20s but sidewall ratio is same

Thanx for the info. Very helpful. We are doing a similar trip (Docker, Laverton, Karijini, Exmouth) in late July/early August (for a couple of months) and have been looking around for an additional 19inch spare. Scarce as the proverbial I understand.
Does anyone have a spare wheel or rim that they would sell or even hire for our trip? I'm running General Grabber AT3 255/50 R19 and on my second set. I'm very happy with them.

I doubt 275 65 20 will fit it is very large, 275 55 20 fits the later models but I think even that will rub unless you are at off road height all the time.
265 50 20 will fit and there are quite a few options available in that size and I think these are probably better than the 19" options just because there is a greater range to choose from.

yeah i got some 19" rims thinking itd be easiest to go biggest, but once i started looking at tyres i found out theres way more bigger options in 20", but 19" still has some advantages.
