Slow day quiz. These multi-choice type questions have always ****ed me off! Sometimes there can be two answers, the right one being MORE correct than the other. And then there are ambiguous questions such as #4. Are they referring to a turbo prop engine, or a bypass fan engine. (as far as I am aware the fan on a bypass fan jet engine does not reverse, but I am willing to learn!) With a turbo prop engine the PROPELLOR pitch can be reversed.
Perhaps I had better stick with helicopters, as I understand what is what with their "propellers"!

Only a few "modern turbofan engines" have clamshells. Most have translating sleeves, which move aft and move a series of blocker doors to deflect the fan thrust forwards through the diffuser vanes.
So the core of the engine still produces forward thrust throughout the application.
Their answer (b) is totally incorrect. The fan does NOT reverse on any turbofan. (d) would be correct for a low-bypass engine, but is also correct on an aircraft like a B717.
I like the Dutch roll question. I choose 'E' - Found in a patisserie in the Netherlands [smilebigeye]
Flight Safety really needs to move into the 90's and get a professional proof reader. Suspect/incorrect/misleading information such as the above is one reason I no longer read it. [biggrin]

Thanks John. So the answer to #4 is a perfect example of how ambiguous some questions are! The "fan" neither reverses OR changes pitch!

Or downright misleading or not proof-read before publication.
Bring back the old Aviation Safety Digest. Now THAT was a great, credible publication [smilebigeye]

From what I recall you would have to go back to days before the "user pays" system came about! :twobeers:

That is a classic example of there being more that one "correct" answer!

I disagree - there is only one correct answer!

Well all you need to know is that it's a bloody good thing I'm not looking after you planes based on my score... [biggrin][bigwhistle]

”a” is correct!

Most of them were pretty easy to get right for someone with a bit of understanding of mechanics and aircraft. But 4, 7 and 14 involved actual knowledge which I was lacking.

”a” is correct!
So unless they have revised it, "a" is the answer shown.
