View Full Version : external rollcages?

Can anyone shed any light on the legalities of having an external rollcage like you see on UK landies? they seem very rare in Oz (do they exist on non-competition vehicles?). I know this might vary state to state, so I'm thinking about Victoria in particular if that helps!

given that some people have brush bars extending back from their bullbars which link to sidesteps on tojo's, I figure it should be fine to have an exo-cage.... but... I aint risking the $$ or a dreaded canary to find out!

TIA,

From what i've heard provided they don't cross over your doors etc.. then hopefully okay.

I'm hoping Discoute knows the answer as i've asked him to put one on mine ;)

The laws are much closer now, but do vary state to state. I don't know about Vic, but in Qld you would be doing well to get one registered. You see some old clappers around rarely, with them. Mainly old cruisers.
It wouldn't be going anywhere without a mod plate and engineers report.
IMHO they are PITA, depending on what driving you do. They lessen clearance width, add weight, and get caught on the littlest bits of nothing, they are more of a hinderance than a help.

Gee that wasn't exactly helpful was it:rolleyes::D

FE: They are pretty helpful when you roll over though. I have seen quite a number of rolled Defenders and there is not a lot to protect your head (they end up pretty flat - the windscreen/door windows crumple much more easily than a normal vehicle).

Yeah for sure, obviousy no argument there.

exo cages from what i've been told do not need blue plate (eng. mod) in qld, from the guy who built my internal. internal cages do need eng. plate. from what i've been told exo cages along as there are no sharp/dangerous edges - pedestrians, they are ok. BUT CHECK!!

main prob with an exo is unless you have diagonal's - cross bracing, they are only good for flops, so you have to bolt/weld through your roof to get some lateral supports!! makes sure you do this otherwise cage is not much chop - probably more dangerous in a high speed roll then nothing!!

my 2 cents, anyway...

I tried to fit an internal roll cage but there was no way I could get it down my throat or up my bum. Go the external I say.

I have been thinking along these lines. After seeing Tony's damage I'm not to keen to see what would be left of mine after a similar incident. It's definatly on my wish list.

I hope you have a winch, you'll need it to get your mind out of the gutter

When I look at these cages, I don't see a major risk of hangups, added width or added risk to pedestrians... but I do see lotsa added safety.

Dave S3 is rite, we call them equipment racks officer here I have an engineers report to prove it.

Exo cages are as a rule only brush bars unless they have cross braces as in internal cages. The strongest option is both exo and internal braced together.

Qld transport rules are under revue and roll cages as we know them will be changed. If the new rules apply there will be no frontal braces permitted. Single hoop over the driver with rear bracing only so if you have a ute a single hoop will be all you can fit. I don't know when or if this round of new rules will apply. This is Qld transport law unto themselves.
