"Clonk" in rear...

I'm sure everyone will think "outer rear hub bushes"... But I've already done those, on both sides, top and bottom.

However on an off-road journey today when hitting sharp or big bumps I was getting a distinct clonk, it appears to be coming from whichever wheel is hitting the rock...

"Clonk" is how I'd best describe it, it definitely wasn't a "clunk"...

The feeling I had was one of "the suspension on that side is loose"... I've been under there multiple times and several shops have checked the car previously (recently wheel aligned too) and no one can see anything wrong...

I'm assuming now it could only be the inner bushings, or the rear subframe? I'd assume subframe would clonk on all bushings, not be side specific... Anything else it could be? It's worse on the left...but is definitely making noise on the right too.

Possibly also loose caliper/brake shield/brake related or exhaust mounts maybe?

Sounds like I needs some fair pressure to clonk. I would be checking the torque of all bolts and visually check for bolt movement.

I think that might be part of it... It does not seem to be back and forth movement (after trying to lever stuff)... But more up and down... I can't see anything loose or any bushings that are moving...

I do wonder if it's the rear shocks as they are original I think...

Does the L322 have composite rear control arms like the P38? I had the dreaded "clonk" in the P38 rear suspension.... ultimately I tracked it to the control arm rivets which clamp the bushing housing. They had stretched ever so slightly. I drilled the rivets out and replaced them with high tensile steel bolts... end of "clonk". (when I say 'stretched', it's not immediately evident ....I got the solution from the US Range Rover forum about 10 years ago[wink11])

Brand new tailshaft and bearing, etc...

It was clonking before I did the hub bushings... I thought it'd fix it and it's a lot better, but still there...

I put the handbrake on on my steep drive and put it into reverse to load it up and then put it into neutral to try and simulate the fore/aft scenario... But it didn't clunk at all, which definitely makes it an "up and down" problem. I'm not sure if the drop links for the sway bar could cause it but I'll try and take a hammer to those tomorrow...

Ah no, I think they sorted it out...these are definitely joined solidly! (I think welded)

Hammered it today and they felt ok! Definitely didn't feel loose but I put the go pro under while rocking car back/forth in drive/reverse... So will see if there's anything obvious moving once I review it... If I find nothing next step is probably attach it and go driving!

Took some videos today....very inconclusive. What I can tell you is that the suspension does move... What i can't tell is anything unusual happening.

It does seem to clonk going forward but not in reverse over the same lump / similar speed... Which is odd.

Can someone do me a favour and take a rubber mallet to your rear shock? When I hit mine about halfway up it's definitely a metal on metal sound/rattling inside the shock... I've never heard a shock make this sort of noise but both my rears do it... Hitting at the bottom gets a little metallic rattle, hitting halfway up is very rattly... This isn't using much force either!

(It's not the brake dust shield or anything else, definitely 100% the shock rattling)...
