Ok we have just got back to Brisbane and finished our trip around Australia. we did 36,260 K's (22662 miles)
Of which 10,000 was on tracks ( with corrications), and 4,500 was on bad (and i mean bad ) off road tracks
See below where we have been , the red is where we have been
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/08/558.jpg

And i love my truck becasue , after towing a ton and a half trailer for all this 36,000k's she did not miss a beat, even after the crap i gave it.
All the way around Aus the only things to go wrong with it were.
1 wheel bearing
Feul trank sprung a leak. Usual rust problem with the 90's tank. After all it was the original tank. But got it welded in Alice springs and it has lasted ever since
1 inner wheel bearing seal (Front)
Broken Gearbox Mount (done by corrications) Ddid not notice untill was back in Brisbane and got it checked out by work and they pointed it out
1 Punture in the trailer trye
1 Punture in the car tyre
1 Buckled alloy
The tracks bring up the stones and polish the uj and prop quite nicely
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
And my new (well they were when i started) shocks look like they have been shot blasted as well. This its the paint that has come off from the stones and not dirt on the shocks
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
But with tracks like this are you siurprised the amount of crap it got
This is the track up to the cape (this is one of the many creek crossing. Go here to see the Video of this crossingDownload Video (http://www.reads4x4.com/videos/creek%20crossing.wmv)

And at the top of Cape York after 700 K's of crappy roads

And my favoruite pic of ayres rock

Funny things that happened on the way around. meet some lovely peopl and all the Landy owners that i meat were great.
Can't remeber how many times i was asked if the 90 was a jeep. The reply that came back from me was usaully. "Thats fighting talk that is"
A chap at the top of the Cape. At Bramwell Junction to be exact. was talking to me about his toyota and its split rad. The rad had disintagrated from the corriactions. He told me he had to wait a week for the part to be sent to the nearest town Cairns and then flown to Weipa where it would have to some how make the 200 mile trip to him . We were at this point about 200 m from any one that could help him. He then asked me what truck i had and i told him a Land Rover. He then went on it to a rant about how he would never bring one of those up to the cape and i must be mad driving around Aus in one of those. (tipical Toyota person) . It was then that i pointed out that i was not the person that was stuck in the middle of no where with a broken rad. He then walked off
The one thing to get back at Toyota drivers is to point out that all of Aus tracks. The famous ones and hard ones. Were created by a chap called Len Beadall. In a series 2 88 Land Rover. This always does the trick

Reads,

Welcome back to Brissy mate. That's an Awesome trip and great pics and report.
Shall be using your map as "inspiration". As usual you've prob. seen more of this country that most of the residents.
Should've told the Tojodriver to "BUGGER" off:lol:

Love your work and your 90.

Reads,
Glad you had a good time. Australia is a blooody big country and is really God's own country when you see it and a trip like that is something that you will remember for the rest of your life.

As usual the landy preforms, but it does not surprise me that the tonka driver was mouthing off, they do that well. However, they have a name for what those toyota drivers have. It is called verbal diarrhea:D

I think just about everyone here would have loved to tag along as well. Now comes the hard part of settling down to the real life.

Welcome back.

G'day Reads90 :)
Congrats on your successful trip :D and that you had a problem free trip, unlike some other brands :( but, preparation, and servicing, are the key to any successful ownership.

One little correction, most of the roads surveyed by Len Beadall were done using a Series 1 "80 inch" only later did he move to 86, 109, then to Series 11 ;) If you can get hold of some of his books ( available at most Libraries) some of the titles "Blast the Bush" "to long in the Bush" there is a link to len beadell on the REMLR main site.

Hearty Congratulations. :)

Just had a quick look on your website and noticed the Hyland ball coupling on the camper. What do you like/dislike about this coupling? I am looking at changing our camper trailer to this coupling thus any info on your opinion of the coupling would be appreciated.

Thanks

I learnt alot of things on the way around, as to do with camper trailers. One thing is that the Hyland Ball was fantasic. We had other people with the pin type moaning to us that they were a pain in the a*se to put the trailer back on the back of the car. As you had to get it leval and square which was difficult in a camp site or the bush. Where as with the ball you get it in the right area and drop it down. Easy.
We did all the k's with the trailer and took it down so really bad tracks. And all in all we gave it hell. But it kept coming back for more. We did not buy an expensive trailer ours was $9,000 all in. With the awning and sides, water tank kitchen and set as you see it.But the thing did what was asked and we are very very pleased with it. We were going to sell it when we got back but we have now decied to keep it.
If you want any more info call me on 0429 197325

Reads90 - I notice on your list of failures / breakages that you haven't mentioned brake pipes. I am sure it was you who came and got some off us in ALice Springs... Wasn't it??

As you could properley tell the 110 rear axel pipe fitted perfectley on to the Disco 1 / Range rover classic style back axel that i have on the 90. Went straight on easy.

You have to be happy with that. As Hannibal off the A Team used to say, I love it when a plan comes together!
