Discovery of gold in Australia was kept secret for 28 years

Nearly 200 years ago, a man called James McBrien made a discovery that would dramatically change Australia.
But it wasn’t until two decades later that others would come flocking.
That’s because the colonial government wanted to keep his discovery a secret.


About 16 years later, Polish-born explorer Paul Edmund de Strzelecki discovered traces of gold near Hartley and Wellington, beyond the Blue Mountains in NSW.
Strzelecki, who famously named Australia’s tallest mountain Mount Kosciuszko, was also forced to keep quiet.


Then in 1851 – 28 years after McBrien first found flecks of gold at Fish River – a man named Edward Hargraves discovered a “grain of gold” in a billabong near Bathurst.
This time, it was no longer possible to keep it a secret

The Palmer River gold rush, [ heard of the battle of Lukinville ?]

If you wanted to cook up a wild adventure story, start with a Queensland river blessed with rich alluvial gold. Throw in a bunch of self-reliant prospectors, an uncontrolled stream of Chinese diggers, Martini-Henry rifles, spirited horses, and a tough indigenous nation that resented and fought the intrusion. Throw it all in a pressure-cooker of Cape York heat, and you’ve got the Palmer River Gold Rush.
In 1872, two brothers from Victoria, William and Frank Hann, along with a botanist, a geologist and others travelled north on a Queensland Government sponsored expedition to investigate the country “North to the 14th Parallel”. Rugged country even now, in those days Cape York was an area even the toughest settlers and adventurers avoided.
