got it the other day. its the update version, shorter and stronger.
there is no need for strengthening the rear door now.

is pretty good, but,,, im not so happy with the instructions or how it sits on the rear door. dosent sit flat with the door but at an alarmingly large angle.
the kit
252

mounted as per instructions
253

modified bracket positions
254
as an example, first pic. 380mm from door to cntr of wheel
second pic 315mm.
ide like it to look like this

here are the instructions.
take note of page 2, 3rd parragraph!

pg1
256
pg2
257
i moved this bracket over 30mm to lose 65mm from the angle.
258
i can make it sit flush with the door but im not keen on having spent over 500 bucks and having to modify it to sit correctly:mad:

You will probably find that the hole positions are due to the fact that landy's have such bad quality control that no 2 vehicles are the same, this is why a lot of the big accessory companies dont make stuff for them, they never fit properly. For $500 i would have designed and built one myself.

The one here http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Land-Rover-County-Defender-Spare-Wheel-Carrier_W0QQitemZ4652739249QQihZ002QQcategoryZ1023 41QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem looks like it sits flat. I'm thinking the plate for this kit might have the mount for the "link arm" recessed into the door though. Can you flip the "H" plate inside the door?

The one I designed and made is similar but lighter duty  ( I'll have to remake it I think ) and I recessed the "link arm" mount into the large plate of the carrier.

The first pic shows how i got mine when i purchased it has been updated...
SEE ATTACHEMENT...

and this is how it came out on my car...

I didnt have any major problems just tricky to fit that bracket down the bottom without cutting you hands from underneath..

i know where your coming from with the bottom bracket, i gave up on the top 2 10mm bolts and drilled straight through. now using 12mm x100mm bolts.

some of my problem lies in the fact that your door bracket sits directly on the door skin(or a plate) where as mine in the new kit sits about 15mm off the door skin. this is just accentuating the problem.

thanks for the feedback 590.

so i thought id better do something about the mess of a tyre carrier i bought!
bearmack did get in contact with me and instructed karcraft to refund my money, but the latter didnt happen, and ide be left with holes in my fender! so i told them ide sort it out!
today i attacked it with a grinder, oxy set and a welder! now im happy with it, just need to paint it!

the old.... door to tyre center was 320mm

now the mod...... and its 260mm of the door and looks ALOT better.

I'm confused - if the carrier was mounted 30mm to the left, into the original chassis holes, wouldn't that have allowed the hinged bracket on the door to also sit across to the left and flatter against the door as well? I guess an overhead shot or closeup of the actual door bracket might answer this.

I am interested in your work-around as I was considering one of these myself until you posted this original thread and made me nervous. I certainly don't want any unnecessary hols in my vehicle.

who said anything about left??
the carrier was moved 30mm to the driverside. the h plate on the door is in a fixed position.

you can see the arc the swing mount goes through. as it is now after ive modified it, at closed the pivot action goes to far and dosent ''lock'' so to speak, so i just have to move the rubber stopper to where it will be more benificial>>>

Pretty ****poor of Bearmach AND Karcraft too for not sorting this out, after all you expect good service when buying gear that they garrantee is high quality and should fit properly.

You really shouldn't have to modify things to fit, that should fit.

Glad you got it sorted Phil and are happy now.

Nice Job, Nothing is more painfull than something that dose not fit right.

Looking at you tyre on the carrier, can you tell me what brand it is and the tyre size, Would also like to know what rim type and size you are using.

Thanks:)

I'm a bit confused why you would need one on Defenders with the stronger (2002 on) door. My door doesn't sag at all and I stand on the spare tyre to access the roof rack. ;)

yes the door is stronger! but the hinges are still as **** weak as ever! one trip to colo heights was enough for me! the squeeks and rattles were too much!
and with a 285 fitted you have to remove the rear screen wiper:mad:

I stand on the spare tyre to access the roof rack
so your in the market for one of my ladders are ya??

What is that 'H-shaped' bracket you have? I just got one of the bearmach jobbies and it just came with two square flat peices of steel.

OK, I installed my wheel carrier on the weekend. I see your problem, but I simply shifted the bracket which connects to the door further to the left until the carrier was flush with the door. It means that the bracket is not in the middle of the mounting plate, but it looks and operates fine. I also note that my setup is for the 2001 defender and used two square plates not the 'H-plate', but I assume you can do the same. I also kept the original strengthing plate as well.

hope this helps a bit

cheers

I have the same carrier on my '98 'fender and it went straight on and fits neat.It doesn't stick out anything like that one.I used the two plate setup like Jimmy, maybe that the better one. Pat
