So today I have delivered my 2011 D4 HSE to a regional panel shop for some TLC.....no, not crash damage, but rather the result of way too much time in the good old WA sunshine. The roof had a definite fade in the middle as well a 'sun spot'..... The bonnet....well what can I say.....even with the 'third' in a row of perspex bonnet edge protectors it had more than it's fair share of stone chips. Add to this the fact that the paint was decidedly past its prime. As for the sides and rear of the D4, all good, go figure?.

So what to do? Paint the whole thing again? Possibly, but hellish expensive to do properly....

Instead I have taken a slightly different tack, the roof proper will be sorted and painted as will the bonnet but at this stage nothing else. Yeah, I can hear your 'wheels turning' re colour match. Ipanema Sand is the colour and sure it's a metallic type, but given the lines of the D4 I reckon I might have half a chance. The roof is being refurbished between each of the roof trim railing channels front to rear. Once the rails go back into place along with the trim strips it will provide a point of delineation. Equally the bonnet has the lines where it sits above the fenders. With any luck the panel shop will get the colour match pretty close, here's hoping....fingers crossed......praying.......lighting incense......and other superstitious stuff!
In the process of taking of the roof rack rails I ran into the 'it never goes to plan' bug with one of the hold downs bolts refusing to budge. Eventually snapping the head 'clean off'....[bawl][bigsad]...but after much thought and discussion with ones good-self I did prevail....a small victory.....

I did think of upgrading.....well.......changing my vehicle but really could not justify it to myself......the D4 continues to give me the driving performance as well as pleasure.

2009 D3 - Buckingham Blue - Mine is booked in next week for a roof and bonnet respray! (the sides are still nearly perfect) - however my roof needs to be "blended" in on the sides as it is faded a bit more than yours by the sounds of it. I'm past being overly concerned about how good a job they do of the blending because its got to look better than what it does now.
Yes - its $2K, but the old girl just keeps on hanging in there so she gets a small present every year for being faithful. (still cheaper than an upgrade - to what!?)
New rims and tyres today - going to the indy on Thursday for a look under the skirt as I have a trip coming up in July.

p.s. - every year I take out the rail bolts and recoat them with anti-seize. And oh the joy when I removed the rails the other day - smooth as silk.

What anti-seize do you use Matti?

on the old dozer and tractors I use copper-cote , but the roof of the Landmark is of a couple of different materials I believe.

In my recent cast around looking to see just what I may be able buy to replace my 302k km D4 HSE I was left asking the same question as Matti4556 ......upgrade - to what!?
In the end the only real upgrade path that would provide me the performance and the comfort was another D4. Quite frankly I don't reckon there would be one out there that has the impeccable service history that my vehicle has.
In fact it has been said that I pamper my D4, and why not!
According to my LR service agent it is the sweetest running of the D4's they work on. I have always spent the loot if it has been required it to keep it up to scratch doing things the way it should be doing them. Yeah sure it is showing all the signs, well externally at least, of the life it has led but but that is now being addressed.
I guess there are other options but all these involve an enormous amount of the 'readies' which if I am truthful I would rather spend on other items of less import.....like food, maybe!

My D4 doing what it does best.......

I have used both the Loktite Silver Stick and copper grease - the silver stick tends to dry and disappear up there on the roof - and i dont blame it because it gets damn hot! The Copper Grease is clay based and stays soft between applications - I dont use much on each bolt.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to flip that photo - I know my way around computers but this one has me beat - so you can all share some of my pain - that's what we do at AULRO don't we? [bigsmile]

My 2008 L322 is the same colour. I also got the roof and bonnet resprayed a couple of years ago. The colour match was good.

.....and there in lies the problem, doesn't it!

I recently had a 'falling out' with MY15 D4 and started looking for an alternative - but nothing come close to the D4 for what I like to do: 1) long distance touring, and 2) towing a 2.5T boat to remote places.

If I could buy a new D4 tomorrow, I would - but I can't. Just don't have the confidence in the D5 or the new Defender - yet!

The 'falling out' turned out to not be the D4's fault - so the love affair continues! [smilebigeye]

Yep. I’ll probably rebuilt my gearbox completely and hold it for another few years until Defenders come down in price. I also wouldn’t mind the eight seater version later on

A 9 seater would be fbt exempt. Wonder if you could get a special order?

That's my plan, nothing comes close (yet) to the D4, not sure on the 130, need to see specs. I do like the Defender 110 P400 X series very much. just not keen on all electric (when car manufacturers will invariably be forced to phase out ICE's) I normally hang onto cars 10y or longer so would prob buy new, doubt they'll come down in price.

I heard on the radio recently that land Rover have announced they will be electric only soon. That tells me the r&d into engines has already stopped.. ps im the same I can't sell mine. I'll hate the next car more

So the paint job has been done! I am well pleased with the result.....the bonnet and the roof now are back to new and the colour match is terrific.....169646 another 10 years for the D4.....maybe......[thumbsupbig]
