old dirt bikes

Hi Folks,
I have finally got to take my Range Rover for a drive. It was all going well until the original temperature gauge flickered a bit then went to max with the red light on. I quickly pulled over and checked under the bonnet, all looked good, checked the engine watchdog and it was reading 84c which is what I would expect with a 85c thermostat. So I took it home and removed the sender unit, and took it to work on Monday and checked it, it seemed to work ok, no sudden changes in resistance as it heated up to make the gauge jump around. So I am thinking it is most likely a dirty connection or in the BECM or the gauge. I have a spare gauge and sender unit I can try. And I can clean and check all the connections to the BECM. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
Thanks,
Alan
