Hi Folks,
I have finally got to take my Range Rover for a drive. It was all going well until the original temperature gauge flickered a bit then went to max with the red light on. I quickly pulled over and checked under the bonnet, all looked good, checked the engine watchdog and it was reading 84c which is what I would expect with a 85c thermostat. So I took it home and removed the sender unit, and took it to work on Monday and checked it, it seemed to work ok, no sudden changes in resistance as it heated up to make the gauge jump around. So I am thinking it is most likely a dirty connection or in the BECM or the gauge. I have a spare gauge and sender unit I can try. And I can clean and check all the connections to the BECM. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
Thanks,
Alan

Do you have any diagnostic gear? If so, you can see what that's reading from the OBDII port. Normal temps would suggest a gauge fault but if the test gear reads high too, I would be looking at the sender unit.

Where does the SRS light fit into all this?

Hi Scott,
yes I must have been half asleep when I did that. I was thinking about the air bag light when writing about the temp gauge. I have a air bag light on also but that is further down my list of things to do. Any way I have a VDO scan tool at home. and There is a Snap On scan tool at work, and my friend has a Text Book. So I will start looking on the weekend. Hopefully I will sort it out. I also was given a Fault Mate, so I contacted Black Box Solutions about getting it changed over to work on my vehicle. They sent me an invoice for $47.00 AU. Which I paid and now they will not answer an email. I think I may have lost my money.
Thanks for your advice, Regards, Alan

There is a red light in the temp gauge that should illuminate when the temp gets too high:

If the pointer moves close to
the RED segment a RED warning light in the
temperature gauge illuminates.

I was going to connect it to an audible alarm because it's too small to notice during the day.

Hi everyone, I replaced the sender unit, even though the original one tested OK. So I replaced it anyway, it was 27 years old. Next I replaced the gauge unit, and all is good, and the world is a wonderful place. Now on to the air suspension. I will rebuild another compressor and valve block, and see if that will fix the problem with that.
