I have a 2013 D4 HSE (from new) and for a while now it's had a weird intermittent issue with the music control buttons on the steering wheel. Sometimes they work... sometimes they don't... and sometimes they work but the buttons do things that other buttons should do. For example... if they are working but playing up, and i press the 'next song' part of the round control, it might change the MODE to something else.. (radio, usb etc) and the actual MODE button in the center does nothing... and the 'next track' button will change the volume. It is completely random as to when it happens...and yes.. it's annoying. Might happen from when i turn the car on, or they might all work correctly for a while and then play funny buggers OR they might just do nothing at all when pressed. For the most part, i just use the other music controls in the centre dash console instead.

However, yesterday whilst I was out I received a phone call and realised the phone control buttons were not working either. None of them!!.... and then I also noticed that the button that activates the voice control also wasn't working. That then got me a bit worried because what if the other buttons on the steering wheel stop working or don't work properly either? ie the cruise control ones... or the other round set of buttons that gets you into some of the cars menu etc.

At a red light, I sat there frustrated and started repeatedly jabbing the voice control button, and lo and behold after 4 or 5 jabs it started to do something... but it wasn't voice control .... it started operating the music volume LMAO. Another few times and it did bring up voice control once.

Has anyone experienced this at all, or is my D4 a bit special? Any tips or idea's on what i could try?

Thanks in advance!
Kirsten.

Common issue. You need to remove the air bag and clean the small connectors on the plugs that interface between the switches and steering wheel. Use some circuit cleaner/lubricant from Altronics etc.
the steering when controls work by specific resistance per button. When the connections get old/stale the values differ and the buttons mess up.

Ah..ok thankyou... i'm not confident to try that so i might see if my indy will take a look when i get it serviced after Easter.

You could also try carefully spraying some contact cleaner (try not to get any on the surrounds as it might discolour), into the steering wheel buttons, as that is what my mechanic did to get my cruise control working properly.
