Flushed the coolant tonight and swapped out the thermostat. Glad I did. Old one was looking a little worse for wear [emoji51]
I believe i got most of the broken plastic out on the first flush. Time will tell i guess.
Funny side note: brown pants moment when i dropped the bleed screw and couldn't find it for about 15 minutes [emoji1787] was a massive relief to see it had somehow rolled around behind the front passenger tyre. 169843https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210328/138eadeea2037e6bb4996646b456f922.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210328/01f067af8aa48cc76e03e4dcfa08ef0a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210328/51d4ca4f903322c1a17945286050417d.jpg

Quick update for anyone who cares. Driving around in the 40° Perth heat recently and saw a max temp of 92°. Seems to sit happily around 87° once moving.
Highest ten temp i saw was 95° but that was 30° and sitting in line at the local coffe drive through for just under 10 minutes.
Fun side note, the previous owner had installed a 15A fuse into the 40A slot for the electric thermo fan [emoji58] ..... idiot
No wonder i never heard the fan switch on

Screen grabs from the torque app after new thermostat was installed. Unfortunately i didn't have the obd2 reader prior to this as a comparisonhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210330/1b927fb787aaa9246e865c6726d2bf2b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210330/b6d9691ee49dfded66140007d981899d.jpg

Td5?
You can buy cooler thermostats for them. Standard is 92 deg C but there’s an 82 deg and 78 deg replacement. 78s are in short supply but 82 deg are available. I was at KLR yesterday and picked some up from the supplier for them.

Hi Shane, always good to hear how other V8’s are going. I’d be happy with those temperatures. Would be similar to mine under those conditions.

Honestly just wish i had the scan gauge a bit earlier to see exactly what it was doing with the original one. There is a noticeable difference in perceived heat coming off the motor and radiating into the panels and bonnet.
Actually, maybe i don't want to know what the temps were prior [emoji1787][emoji106]

It’s the excess heat that kills these motors, it did mine; first the head gaskets, then the block.
Keeping temperatures below 100C is the way to go.
Also, make sure your fan is working properly.
