To keep it brief, the old D2 with the lot is a bit emphysemic (likely - age related). Choices:
1. Trick up (limited go fastish bits for the 4.0 V8 though)
2. Rebuild (time v effort?)
3. Repower with a 4.6? (Comments to this end very appreciated)
4. Move to a P38? (Welcome any advice on air suspension durability Off road, and off road acesssories available)

BTW to all contributers, this has been and continues to be the best LR/RR forum worldwide IMHO. I have learnt heaps and hopefully passed on a bit so thanks to everyone for making it so.

Cheers

Rebuild and keep. There are virtually no accessories available for P38A.:(

Hardy Neale makes some stuff - see http://www.hardrange.com

What's happened to it? Burning oil or something? A D2 isn't that old in the scheme of things.

any half decent workshop could rebuild it,,
they are pretty simple things,
its the age old question--
how fast do you want to go?

how many kays has it done?

WRT point 4 in your original post, I had an Air Suspension RR for a few years on my farm, and the height position sensors were always failing (OK - 3 or 4 times in 3 years). I don't reckon they stand up to mud and dust very well. Probably OK in the city though.

To replace the sensors worked out at $400 a throw. For the last 6 months before I sold it, I just put up with it going to "safe home" height.

A 4.6 that has had top hat liners fitted would be my choice over a from the factory 4.6 , the top hatted may not do any more K`s than factory but it will not suffer from block/coolant problems and because of a D2s EFI fitting a 4.6 will need to be done with a bit more though/reasearch than just the physical fitting , i would think .

A rechip from RPi Engineeering will fix that.
