We're in Tassie for Easter and were driving from Burnie to Strahan this afternoon. There's a long section of roadwork past Cradle Mountain that's unsealed with no lines. Has a 60kmh limit. I was doing 60 kmh as posted and a car with a couple of young women in it who were behind me were getting aggro and went hooning past us, showering stones on us and giving me the finger and yelling abuse as they went past.
And almost immediately a police car materialised from behind us and pulled them over - he must've been sitting a couple of cars behind the women and they'd not noticed him.
They were driving in convoy with 4 other cars - mostly twin cabs, three in front of me and the women's car and another behind them - and their mate behind them was about to do the same thing but pulled back in when the cops put their lights on. The police car was a marked 4WD so it's bit of a surprise that neither car had noticed him.
I'm in the D4 and their utes were holding me up prior to the roadworks but when we got to the roadworks the first three vehicles took off at 100ks, with two driving side by side for a while. All local number plates in case you're wondering and not rentals.

I found when we were there on holidays most of the locals drove too fast, & the signed speed limit on some of the roads suprised me, thought it should have been half of posted speed.

Yeah, my experience here has been of me doing the speed limit - on roads that do feel under-engineered for the posted speeds - only to have a local go rocketing past. You get that in SA too but the roads are straight there ....

Reminds me of an incident in the middle of the day, quite a few months ago,i was on the gateway motorway, for those that know it, siting on the speed limit,100km/hr.
Going south just before the Bridge,a D4 went past me doing some horrendous speed.
Sure enough, at the Old Cleveland rd exit, the police had it pulled over.
The Council have road monitoring cameras, and probably noticed it and called the police.
May have been someone on here?[bighmmm][biggrin]

Except Corkscrew Rd, it’s not straight!

A friend tells a story of how he was behind a guy flying along the freeway, but still wasn't going fast enough for my mate who was in a V8, so he passed him at an even greater speed, just then a cop jumped out of hiding and waived him over but my mate was in the right hand lane so just kept going and the guy he'd passed pulled over, the cop didn't care as he got a ticket to add to his quota.

I love the agro ones that travel behind and tail gate you and hurtle abuse, but in reality it the car in front of you that's holding up the traffic. It's the look directly in front of you not on the road ahead mentality.

I was cruising along between Croydon & Georgetown, just after the Gilbert River is a long straight.
I'm cruising along at 115kph when a black sports car flies up, overtakes & cuts close in front of me. I beep the horn & just keep cruising.
At the end of he long straight it goes to single lane with a gate on each side, apparently Highway Patrol were sitting inside one of the gates.
I just cruised past at 115kph as the HP wrote a ticket for the bloke in the black sports car.
I was polite & gave them a wave.

A friend told me how one of his Dad's friends bought a sportscar a Jensen Interceptor and was taking it on a test run in the country, he noticed a cop in hot pursuit on a motorbike so pulled over and said "So what speed was I doing?" the cop says "I don't know it went off the scale!" so he said "Why did you stop me?" cop says "I just wanted to see what sort of a car can go so fast" the cop was very interested, made him pop the bonnet to look at the engine and let him off with a warning. Once had a P plater on the freeway come past me in his Falcon - V8, loud exhaust - slowed to match my speed and looked at me like he wanted a race - I was on my CBR1000F at the time so this mystified me a bit, but heck, let's play I thought. I slowly accelerated and Mr Stupid next to me kept up and then floored it - I then matched his speed - up until I he either chickened out or reached the Falcons vmax - I still had another gear to go and opened it up and left him - much amusement was had (by me) - I slowed back down again just before turning off at my exit - he went flying past at blat speed maybe thinking he'd got the better of me - and just before I lost sight of him I saw some red and blue lights come on a car he was overtaking...
Guess he was a pedestrian for a while after that. I was still laughing when I took my helmet off at home 10 minutes later. I still can't imagine why he thought his car was a match for a 1000cc bike...

Had a similar experience with a 170cu Falcon v my Honda 4, unfortunately no blue light intervention. I paced him til the pistons almost exited through the bonnet, then selected top gear and left him for dead. [bigrolf]

Idiots speeding, tailgating, driving dangerously is rife everywhere. I live in a 50km/hr street where idiots do 60 - 80km/hr all the time.
There are countless roads all over the country where drivers do 20kmh+ over the 60kmhr / 80kmhr / 100kmhr speed limits with seemingly no consequences. Police presence is minimal on most of our roads, despite all the advertising.
The only way to stay safe and protect ourselves is to be uber vigilant and drive very cautiously - all the time.
I have to say, It's even worse as a cyclist on our roads, whereby these speeding bogans don't recognise that cyclists have equal right to be on the roads as cars.
The prevalent attitude seems to be - not that we all share the roads - but that 'everyone should get out of the way of ME'.
Arapilies, it's great to hear that Karma sometimes rises immediately, but mostly for those bogans its a long time coming I reckon. In the mean time, all we can do is lead by example and stay safe.

Funny thing is, this is the second time that something like this has happened.
If you know the Hume you'll know that there's a very long 60kmh stretch as you come into Holbrook from the south. I was following the speed signs a few years ago and a couple went past, beeping horn, fingers raised etc. About 5 seconds later a cop stepped onto the road ahead and waved them over. Perfect timing.
Similar things used to happen along one stretch of road in my hometown, but the thing is that quite apart from being law abiding I also knew where the local police hid ....

Did a similar trick at about 2am on the Hume highway in about 1986. A trucky felt tailgating me was funny at 110kph, then 120 then 130. Did little tweak to about 200 before moving off the highway. After they drove past at speed, I followed and laughed my head off when I over took the now stopped trucks with a very welcome blue light holding them all up. Not sure what speed they got up to but assume it was a little below the BMW k100s top speed of about 220 before the speed limiter kicked in. Note most truckies are cool to share the road with.

So, is obeying speed limits sanctimonious and holier than thou?
Truth is that Australians are **** drivers - I've lived in the UK and Japan and in both countries drivers are not only more courteous and less aggro but they also typically drive quicker than here but without continually looking like they're about to lose control.
And the concepts of driving to the conditions, or keeping a safe breaking distance, are also completely alien here.

No. Truth is that everyone believes they are perfect, and you seem to believe you are more perfect than others. Here's a hint: you are not. I would bet you break the road laws at least ten times a day. You won't know this, but you will.
Your time would be better spent watching your own driving rather than sensationalizing, apparently for your own amusement, the driving of somebody else. Not even those charged with monitoring the driving, i.e. the Police, are perfect.
Of course, if you believe you have a higher purpose, they may be recruiting.

We have, at #1, someone who saw something once.. Sure, that's happened to ALL of us. So, your "experience" is worse than mine? Sell it to the MSM. they'll make a buck.
At #2 Someone who saw something, and it was way worse than #1.
There could be way more, if you look.
Driving is a part of living at this time. Are you perfect at either one of these things??? If you are, can you please post how you are perfect at living? Because clearly nobody is perfect at driving.. And, if you cannot do either of these things, why not just shut up? It's not hard.

Can't remember the last time I abused someone for obeying the road rules. The idiots in question, if they wanted to press on at greater than the speed limit could simply have overtaken us when it was safe to do so but instead they had to be aggro.
Oh, and there was a prominent sign at the start of the roadworks that said that police were enforcing the speed limits, which it turns out that they were.

That was not, not once, the premise you started this thread on. You started this thread on a " i'm good and you aren't" premise, and you know it.
If you have something to say, don't hide it behind some pathetic 'I'm good' theme. You are not good, and you won't be until you are honest.

Unfortunately not - the bike is for sale now and I no longer ride. Various reasons for that, but I might get an electric motorbike or something eventually for scooting around town on. The Police no longer have much of a sense of humour about speeding and given I'm speeding in any speed zone when I click it into second gear, I won't risk it. Also haven't ridden for a few years and returning riders my age are about the highest casualty rate going - I would imagine I could get myself into trouble pretty quick if I jumped on it now and went for a blat.

Smart man. Where I live, there are two mountain roads just perfect for motorcycles. Unfortunately, a lot of the motorcyclists are not up to the performance standards of their machines.
A lot of this group appear to belong to what I have named "The MLC MC", a.k.a. "Mid-life Crisis Motorcycle Club".
To become a member, it would appear one as to be some sort of shiny-arsed academic and/or a member of a Profession, such as Law.
The shiny, black vests, black helmets and black boots with silver chains are a dead giveaway. (Not to mention the Harleys and pretend Harleys.)[bighmmm]
p.s. some even wear the face masks with the skull on them. [biggrin]

Litre bikes will certainly wake you up.
I have a kit heading this way soon for mine…
Will push a lazy 6lb of boost for a while, good for 250hp on the tyre.
I’ll leave it like that until I’m ready to fit the second stage parts, which make it good for 450hp.
At that point I’ll be extending the swing arm a bit [emoji41]
