101 Rumble But In The Rear

All 101 owners will know about the 101 rumble where the front driveshaft rumbles away on trailing throttle at about 85-90kph.

Well yesterday I took my 101 out for a run after about a year of no use, and I got a rumble but it was not from the front but from the back - never had this before - is just like the front rumble. I checked and topped up all the oils so that is not a cause.

Anyone had this and what was the cause?

Silly question - have you greased / checked the UJ’s on the rear prop ?

Checked the exhaust hangers?

The UJ on the diff end was replaced a little while back and greased - havn't checked the brake drum end and will do so now - the spline was greased when the rear UJ was replaced.

Hadn't thought about the exhaust hangers, so will check them as well.

Drove 30km and the noise in the rear on training throttle is quite severe - I have a spare front driveshaft so I will see if it will fit and try it if it does.

I took the rear driveshaft out and found I made a silly mistake when putting it back in before - the four bolt holes in the diff flange are not arranged in a nice square (that would be too easy) with two sides of the square being very slightly smaller than the other two sides. Some how I was able to bolt it all up.

So I removed and put it in correctly expecting the to fix the rumble - but no, it is still there so not sure what the issue is [bigsad]. The front driveshaft is 2-3" longer than the rear so the spare I have cannot be used.

Bearings in the back if the tfr case? Bearings in the diff? Bearings in the overdrive? I just dont know - I will leave it for the moment and see what happens.

Maybe I should take it down to Nowra and get 101Ron to fix it for me [bighmmm].

Got a lot of other things to do.

Pity that didn’t fix it, was thinking it was something simple but you may need to let it develop a bit - hopefully that won’t break anything in the meantime.

If the propshaft flange arrangement is the same in a 101 as a RRC then the TCase end is similarly 'off square' as the diff. Diff flange and TC flange have the same pattern, you can flip the prop end for end no probs.

Maybe the other end of the prop is grumpy.

Yes it should be the same as early RRC - Yes I guess I could turn it around - will try that when I come back to resolving the issue.

Hi Garry,

I'm not suggesting flipping the prop, just suggesting that the four bolts on the TC end are similarly 'nearly squarely' arranged as on the diff flange.

If you managed to bolt the prop up to the diff end flange with a mis-match (as in post#1), then maybe there is the same problem on the other end.

That end will be fine - it has been bolted up there for years.

I put up this post in May last year Needle Bearing Cap - UJs (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/278720-needle-bearing-cap-ujs.html)

Basically one of the bearing caps on the rear diff end of the rear drive shaft was turning. I replaced the UJ which fixed the issue but it is only now that I have started using the vehicle - so the only thing that changed was removing the rear section of the driveshaft replacing the UJ and putting it back as described above. There is no indication I did anything wrong with the UJ as it moves freely and smoothly. The splines on the driveshaft can only go in one way so I did not put it back together out of phase.

Having it sit for nearly a year may have caused issues in the diff or tfr case.

I will sort it out in due course but it is just annoying as there are a whole bunch of other things I need to sort on this vehicle.
