Puma Gremlins

This may be a bit of a rant, but I am stuck, not sure which way to turn although I still have lots to check
.
Firstly our 2010 Puma Defender runs well, no performance problems at all. We have had a Code P0046 (Turbo Boost control solenoid or circuit range, Permanent) appearing for about 6 years or 80,000kms, never been able to find it. We had the EGR disabled about 6 years ago. Every year or 2 the Puma goes into limp mode, a quick ignition off and on gets us going, no apparent fault codes. I think we tracked this down to a sticky linkage between the Turbo actuator and the variable vane. A bit of Never Seez and all is good for a few more years. If we do not lubricate the fault recurs every few days. If this happens 3 times in succession the MIL light comes on but the vehicle still operates normally. We can reset the MIL light but not P0046

The fault came back a few weeks age so I put a bit more effort into finding it without luck, actually made things worse. Assuming the fault is in the turbo air circuit and controls,
1 We checked all hoses and intercooler. We have solid pipes not long flexible hoses to the intercooler.
2 Checked the 5 wires from the turbo actuator for breakages. There is a Technical Bulletin out on this but our model is of a later VIN
3 Checked the linkage from the actuator to the turbo, had a tight spot but now very free,
4 Cleaned the MAP sensor, it was quite clean as EGT bypass. Also when driving the MAP sensor seems to behave correctly, moving up and down depending on the Turbo load. Max is about 240Kpa, spiking a little higher from time to time. This relates to a maximum boost of about 20psi.
5 Replaced the MAF as I had a spare, both seem to read in the correct ballpark
6 The Air pressure sensor on the airbox reads around 100KPA which I think is correct.
7 Vehicle had a recent 10k service including new oil and filters.
8 I haven’t removed the turbo to check as this appears to be working fine and looks like a bit of a pain to get out.

In the past few days more faults have appeared, ALL UNTESTED, but cannot be reset although some come and go. These include U3000 (Control Module fault), B1A81 (internal trip switch), B1A75 (Fuel Senser 1) P1602 (immobiliser / engine control module), U0401 (Invalid data received from Engine control module) and U2101(Control module configuration incompatible)

I would love some feedback or comments / solutions

Thanks for taking time to read, Erich

Hi Erich,

I'd reckon the U faults are all from the same cause, and it's probably the CanBus not behaving correctly, I have a few instances of numerous and random errors when I leave my ultrascan connected and restart the car shortly after stopping it.

Try disconnecting the OBII reader before you start the car and then connect it after a few minutes, sometimes the readers can interfere with the device checking that is done by the various control modules on start-up. On one occasion I have had to disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour after the the third try, this should make the control modules re-search for / initialize everything.

Check your earths (everywhere you can ) and make sure they are clean and tight, my D2 was shockingly good at self loosing the earths.

I not sure if I'd be discounting the bypass of the ERG as part of your P0046 problem.

Cheers Glen
