View Full Version : Oil Filter Rod - is there a seal between the external nut and the filter body?

Gentlemen,
I have '53 80" with an external oil filter under the inlet manifold.
The Filter canister is held in place and against the rubber O-ring seal by a larger hollow shaft with a hex nut and metal flange welded on the end. Should be some form of flexible seal fitted to the flange so we have an Oil tight seal against the Filter canister? I cannot see how it could be Oil tight at pressure without some form of seal. The parts manual shows nothing and the Work shop manual makes no mention of it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
regards and best wishes to all,
Jeff

Thanks BSF,
That is a big help.
I have discovered one of my problems, is the the large centre tube is slightly bent at the thread end, making it difficult to get a good seal.
So I either need to replace the central tube OR find a Spin -on- Filter Adaptor to suit my 2 litre Spread bore engine.

Can anyone tell me where either of these items may be sourced?

Many thanks
jeff

Or you could straighten your centre tube.
It might break, depending how bent it is, but worth a try.
Problem will be you need something with the same thread mounted in a vice so you can screw the tube into it.

Googling should throw up spin-on adaptors, there are a few UK companies that used to supply them.
Plenty for the 2.25 motor e.g. Adaptor - Oil Filter Housing (FF005156) for 2.25 Petrol Engine Land Rover Series IIA/III (https://www.famousfour.co.uk/new_parts/ff_part?part=9612)
Not sure if it's exactly the same on the 2.0 litre.

Found it parts | Flexolite (https://www.flexolite.co.uk/categories?by_text%5Bquery%5D=land+rover&site=flexolite&form_key=by_text)
